Madeleine Yastrow, the producer of our sister television show, Bring It Home, turned us on to a consignment shop full of eclectic goods at affordable prices. Mari Ann Weiss-Cater opened Urban Re-Mix (1468 S. Michigan Ave.) last July after 25 years working in advertising. Weiss-Cater has always had a liking for home accessories, but after visiting a girlfriend’s shop in Virginia Beach, she realized it was something she could turn into a living. After a ton of research, she decided to open a consignment shop.

Weiss-Cater is extremely specific as to what makes the cut—most of her pieces are virtually new. There can be no signs of wear-and-tear or pet damages, and everything must be cleaned. She also works with some designers at the Merchandise Mart and a few realtors, adding never-been-lived-on pieces from showrooms and model homes. Weiss features the work of local artists, too. Urban Re-Mix offers everything from stunning vintage crystal chandeliers to American and European antiques. The store is open Tuesday-Friday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
