Gubi chairs at Komplot

This weekend we went to our friends’ house for lunch and sat in their new Gubi chairs. I loved them so much I had to do some research on them (the chairs, not my friends). Turns out they were created by the Danish company Komplot and are so celebrated for their comfort and unique design that they won Best of NeoCon for innovation in 2003 (among other awards) and the original wood version is part of the permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. What makes the chair so special is that it was made using a new technique of moulding a 3-D veneer that allows all the edges of the shell to be turned away from the sitter (making for soft edges and the appearance of a thicker seat, while using half the material). My friends got theirs (upholstered in leather with the tubular legs) on Craig’s List (craigslist.org), but new ones are sold online here.
