What a bright idea! GE sent me a sample of its new energy smart LED bulb, which uses 77% less electricity than a 40 watt incandescent, and lasts 22.8 years (when used three hours a day; it will last 25 longer than incandescent). It’s the first bulb of its kind to be Energy Star qualified, has no mercury, and comes on instantly. Fine, fine, fine, you say, but how’s the light? Fantastic! We popped it into our kitchen pendant and were completely won over by the soft light and the “petals” that keep the bulb cool. It retails for $50, but is totally worth it. Do the math, people!
