The other day we received photos of the simply, beautifully designed Storefront Company Restaurant in the historic Flat Iron Building. The restaurant, which opened in spring, screams DIY—owners Steve Harris and Claudia Gassel transformed what was a retail space into a restaurant that mixes traditional boutique design, contemporary finishes, and turn-of-the-century architecture. The space seats 65 and features two large communal tables, as well as more intimate booths, a large kitchen counter designed to make guests feel as if they’re in the chef’s kitchen and a large wraparound bar. Shiny black tiles line several of the walls and contrast with the fresh white tabletops. The star of the décor is a mixed-media collage from local artist Gary Weidner (whose work was featured in the Chicago-based film, “The Break Up"). Décor isn’t the only reason to pop into this restaurant, however—the menu boasts pea tortelloni, rabbit with cauliflower, hand-cut noodles, Gouda and sherry as well as beef loin and lamb. A feast for eyes and the palate.
