Visitors to the Kohler Design Center in picturesque Kohler, Wisconsin—just a quick two-hour road trip from Chicago—can now step inside superstar Jonathan Adler’s brain (always swimming with “happy chic” thoughts, no doubt) when they tour his new Barococo Futurism bathroom in the Kohler Designer Room Gallery. To set the scene, Adler combined ornate architecture and moldings with more minimalist elements like a sharply contoured bathtub and unusually square toilet to achieve a luxe, modern look that he says was inspired by the glowing rococo boudoir in the Stanley Kubrick flick 2001 Space Odyssey. All of the room’s elements (minus plumbing fixtures) were created and brought in by Adler, and the project will be on view to the public (8–5, Mon.-Sat.) for at least a year. Make a day of it by starting with a factory tour (8:30am Mon.–Fri., free), then check out the entire 36,000 square feet of Kohler mania.
