Out of the Box
In Skokie, a modern house for discriminating clients- the architects themselves
From the street, little of the interior is visible.
A two-story courtyard fills the house with natural light. The homeowners rarely need to turn on lights during the day, lowering their overall electricity costs.
The crisply modern kitchen lends itself to casual entertaining. Clark gave the space an eclectic feel by using ash for the upper cabinets, walnut for the lower ones.
An imposing limestone fireplace separates the living and dining rooms. Eco-friendly cork flooring was used throughout the first floor.
The home's exterior was designed for privacy. A brick wall gives the courtyard a secluded feeling, and the main entrance cannot be seen from the street.
The master bathroom is home to a pleasing mix of clean, natural materials, from the limestone floors and porcelain tile walls to custom cherry cabinets that seem to float off the floor. Setting windows high on the wall eliminated the need for window treatments.
Living spaces in the house are oriented toward the rear, with its walls of windows.
