Melissa Edelman’s new downtown Highland Park antique shop Antiquaire is perfect for those who like a side of industrial edge with their French country motif. Oak tables and armoires bump up against white milk-painted Gustavian Swedish pieces, pottery and huge copper pots from Istanbul, and old butcher tables and industrial lockers from France. Because all are imported and many are heavy, the pieces are expensive (the highest price we saw was $19,850, for a granite farm table that "took six men to move,"says Edelman; a pair of funky 1940s Guillerme et Chambron side chairs was $6,950). Edelman has two warehouses in France and one on the North Shore, all filled with merchandise-a good thing, as designers and local homeowners are having a field day here. Says Edelman, "People are walking in and saying, "You’ve opened everybody’s dream!’"1900 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park, 847-780-4779; antiquaireonline.com.
