Yeah, sure, Eataly is impressive. But for old-school Italian goodness, you gotta go west. In 1968, long before Mario Batali came to River North, Naples-born Giuseppe Quercia came to Cicero and landed a job working for Frank Deluca at a neighborhood pizza joint called Freddy’s. The business grew from a place to get thick rectangular slices and an Italian ice to an authentic Italian deli (now owned by Quercia) with a takeout menu full of melt-in-your-mouth prepared foods. Regulars line up for sinfully buttery chicken Marsala, gnocchi that are little pillows of heaven, and ridiculously good lasagna. The grocery also has gelati, cheeses, meats, olive oils, seasonings, and freshly baked breads. Batali would love it.
