Ways to Get Moving (With or Without Some Help)

Winners for best running club, ‘70s-style workout, yoga class with fringe benefits, speed fix, and bike community.

Autobahn Country Club   Zbigniew Bzdak/Chicago Tribune
Speed Fix

Autobahn Country Club

Imagine yourself strapped in behind the wheel of a mint-condition Maserati, Porsche, BMW, or Audi, with nothing but a sinuous ribbon of empty asphalt in front of you. You flip down the visor on your helmet, put the car in gear, and do 0 to 60 in three seconds flat. Before you know it, you’re screaming around the curves of a three-and-a-half-mile private track, pushing the machine to its operational edge. A four-hour session at this southwest suburban auto club costs $619 and includes safety instruction, a meal, and—because what is speed without glory?—timed competitions with other drivers. 3795 Centerpoint Way, Joliet, autobahncc.com

Two-Wheeled Community

Rapha Chicago

This über-hip cycling gear company recently opened a brick-and-mortar shop—correction, “clubhouse”—in a handsome building in Wicker Park. Yes, they sell apparel, but the place really does feel more like a coffeehouse than a store. Rapha organizes dozens of group rides across the city, including a two-day out-and-back with an overnight stay in a picturesque village on the shore of Lake Geneva. 1514 N. Milwaukee Ave., rapha.cc/us/en_US/clubhouses/chicago

Yoga Class with Fringe Benefits

Temperance Trikonasana

Yes, yoga with drinking is a thing: You can find any number of local classes that offer postsession wine tastings or happy hours. But the monthly vinyasa classes at the Evanston brewery Temperance have ennobled the trend. The $15 fee is donated to a local charity, like Connections for the Homeless or the Syrian Community Network. After the workout, students enjoy a complimentary beer and meet a representative from the charity. Anyone who’s still thirsty after that can amble over to the taproom and pony up for another pour. Temperance Beer Co., 2000 Dempster St., Evanston, temperancebeer.com/yoga

Running Club

Three Run Two

This five-year-old grassroots group fielded an impressive 80 entrants in last year’s Chicago Marathon, but you don’t have to be a competitive runner to join. Unlike most local running clubs, this one has no barriers to membership, not even a fee. Seasoned members mentor newbies during the club’s three weekly four-to-five-mile group runs, which attract dozens of participants of all ages and endurance levels, even in winter. threeruntwo.com

’70s-style Workout

Fleetwood Skating Rink

In case you’ve forgotten, good old-fashioned roller-skating on four wheels is great aerobic exercise. This venerable suburban rink, complete with spinning lights and a snack bar, recently laid down a brand-new maple hardwood floor, so get out on it. Knee socks and shimmery short shorts optional. From $10 with rental. 7231 W. Archer Ave., Summit, fleetwoodrollerrink.com
