December is high season for piano players. The Old Town School of Folk Music offers a referral service (773-751-3326) that connects you to musicians that the folks there know and recommend. The Red Head Piano Bar (16 W. Ontario St.; 312-640-1000), a home for versatile classically trained musicians, does the same for its players. Mercy Kumar, the bartender at the Zebra Lounge (1220 N. State Pkwy.; 312-642-5140), the old-school Rush Street–area lounge, says that as the holidays approach, lots of people come to scout for players. For a sense of how much a hired hand will cost, note that John Zamojcin, a regular at the Red Head, makes about $150 to $175 an hour for a private gig, with past tips ranging from $20 to $100.
