THE MUSIC GEEK: Jim DeRogatis' favorite sites
Sun-Times music critic, book author, and cohost of Chicago Public Radio's music talk show Sound Opinions

In the past the only place you could read about underground bands was in fanzines, Jim DeRogatis says. Now the fanzine press has shifted to the blogosphere. “The music scene is vibrant and incredibly diverse and so is the online writing of it," he says.

BeachwoodReporter.com
ChitownDailyNews.com
DeRogatis reads the music blogs at these e-zines for reviews of shows under the radar, festival coverage, and previews of upcoming bands (but he thinks ChitownDaily News.com is a little snooty).

TheCMF.com
Chicago Metal Factory lists small underground metal shows, venues, and news.

MPShows.com
For the real Chicago punk scene, this site includes calendars, news, and upcoming show information.

PitchforkMedia.com
For general music news, he reads the Chicago-based review megasite Pitchfork. Although he admires the reviewers' enthusiasm, he wishes the stories were better written.

TheDailySwarm.com
Produced by David Prince, former co-manager of the Chicago-based band Poi Dog Pondering, this site is a clearing-house for breaking music stories in the mainstream press.
