Chicago as Gotham City

Until The Dark Knight, no one had ever flipped an 18-wheeler truck. To prepare, the special effects crew mounted an air cannon inside the back of the truck. On the front of the truck, they attached a row of steel teeth to bite into the pavement and prevent skidding as the truck somersaulted. On the night of the shoot, the truck flipped on cue when the driver fired the air cannon, discharging a massive steel rod that delivered 120 tons of force at the point of impact. There was little damage to the street since the truck was dragging a steel plate that absorbed the brunt of the rod’s kinetic force. The teeth on the front of the truck did chew up LaSalle Street a bit, but a patch crew soon had the damaged asphalt looking good as new.
