Cardiologist
Rush University Medical Center

While women now account for one-third of the physicians in the United States, fewer than 10 percent of cardiologists are female, according to a November study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Given that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women—deadlier than all forms of cancer combined—“the woman’s touch” is crucial, says Annabelle Volgman, 58, director of the Rush Heart Center for Women, the first center of its kind in the Chicago area when it opened in 2003. “We have learned so much in 12 years,” she says, explaining that women exhibit different symptoms and types of heart disease than men and require different treatments. Volgman is hopeful: The gap between the number of women and the number of men dying from heart disease has narrowed significantly in the last decade.
