among the 110,000 volumes on offer at the Newberry sale
Sure, the Newberry Library Book Fair is a good place to stock up on beach reads, but it’s also a treasure-trove of rare and valuable volumes. We asked the fair’s manager, Dan Crawford, to pick the top five finds from this year’s sale.
1) Reminiscences of Chicago During the Civil War, a rare Lakeside Classics volume from 1914 and a big get for Civil War buffs; asking price: $250
2) Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a 1933 copy signed by Alice Liddell Har-greaves, the inspiration for the title character; asking price: $2,500
3) The Case of the Barking Clock, a 1947 novel by the Chicagoan Harry Stephen Keeler—“known as one of the weirdest mystery writers ever,” Crawford says—with a full-page inscription in which Keeler notes that he borrowed a chapter from one of his wife’s science- fiction stories; asking price: $100
4) Portraits, a signed and dated copy of the 1976 book of images by the photographer Richard Avedon; asking price: $600
5) You’re on the Wrong Foot Again, Charlie Brown, a softcover copy from 1978, signed by Charles Schulz; asking price: $100
