Growing up in the Bay Area, Bell sang in the chorus, loved astronomy and physics, and planned to study computer science or engineering at UCLA. Joining the NFL before college graduation took him in a slightly different direction, but, suffice it to say, Bell is not your stereotypical jock with only brute force on the brain. “Most people see what I do for a living and assume that’s all that I am,” he says. “I am blessed to play football professionally—but I like to keep an open mind.”
