The singer and songwriter John Mellencamp, 1985. “I got a call to do a portrait of him for Rolling Stone, and when I was there at his family’s farm in Seymour, Indiana, he asked me to do some photos of him with his grandfather. He liked them so much that he called later and said he was doing an album called Scarecrow and wanted me to do the cover. The photos were taken in Seymour. The first day of shooting was rained out; the cover won a lot of awards. John is a good ol’ boy. We’ve worked together for years. He gives everybody a nickname. He calls me either Bowser or Fat Man or just Hauser.”
