Though el trains run regularly along the tracks behind this four-unit building at 1919 North Sheffield Avenue, residents may not realize it unless their curtains are open. The building’s thick, well-insulated walls muffle the noise from passing trains so that they sound only a little louder than a rumbling furnace. What’s more, the developers offer a sound-insulating package for the windows. “You do see the train go by outside your living-room windows,” acknowledges Mario Greco, the Rubloff agent handling the sales in the building—but true Chicagophiles might regard that as an asset.
At presstime, only one unit—a 5,000-square-foot, second-floor condo—remained for sale in the building. The three-room master suite has an enormous master bath and four Juliet balconies overlooking Sheffield Avenue. Three more bedrooms are arrayed along a 36-foot-long hallway with barrel-vault ceilings. The living and dining rooms, as well as a paired kitchen and family room, are at the rear of the condo.
Melrose Partners, which developed the property, put an ornate new brick and limestone façade onto the building, which is at least 90 years old. Inside, they used impressive finishes throughout, including thick, eight-foot-tall mahogany doors and cabinetry that was hand-built on the premises.
