16. Chicago Cut Steakhouse

Prime rib at Chicago Cut Steakhouse   Photo: Abel Uribe/Chicago Tribune

What a lively bar to hang out at while waiting for a table! What a wonderfully executed old fashioned made with Templeton Rye! What a view of the river and skyline from the dining room! What fresh shellfish in the crab cocktail and in the lobster mac and cheese!

But what’s the deal with the steak?

Perplexingly, an overcooked and underseasoned bone-in New York strip is the meal’s weakest link. It’s hard to imagine this unremarkable specimen coming from an onsite dry-aging room— especially with the rest of the experience so exquisite. When Chicago Cut is on, steaks are lights out. If the three-year-old suit magnet could deliver more reliably, it would rank higher on this list.

Perfect for: Scenesters on the scene
