Chic for $100

Is it possible to dress chicly from head to toe on a tight budget? Four staffers shopped until they dropped

Stores that specialize in trendy apparel at low prices get a boost during recessionary times. So we sent four staffers with $100 each on a mission to put together a complete fall outfit including footwear. They were told to limit themselves to one purchase per store and were allowed to borrow one piece from their own closets (the prices paid include sales tax). The results:

PAULINE SHIH

Her best buy: "The dress, because I can easily dress it up or down with outerwear and accessories. I also found a romantic antique brooch for $5 at Buffalo Exchange in Lincoln Park, but unfortunately it broke at the photo shoot."

$54.02 . . . Brown satin pleated dress with square collar by Mieko Mellucci, at Akira (1814 W. North Ave.; 773-489-0818)

$33.06 . . . Belted safari jacket with gathered front and roll-tab sleeves by DKNY Jeans, at Marshalls (600 N. Michigan Ave.; 312-280-7506)

$6.60 . . . Opaque white over-the-knee tights, at Target (2656 N. Elston Ave.; 773-252-1994)
