This Spring Break, join the Museum of Science and Industry for four straight weeks of hands-on creativity at MSI’s Spring Make Festival.
Try out the technology reshaping the worlds of design and production in the Make Shop, a facilitated experience that allows guests to create a personal memento by progressing through three activities: vinyl cutting, 3D printing and building an LED light circuit. As they create, guests will learn about problem-solving skills, the diverse community of local Chicago makers and how making can have a positive impact on communities.
Because so much of the maker process focuses on problem solving and iteration, MSI staff will host Failure is an Option!, a daily 20-minute stage show that challenges guests to engineer, test and modify a skyscraper so it remains standing while it undergoes wind tests, reinforcing the basics of the engineering design process.
Continue discovering the exciting world of making through various activities on select Saturdays during Spring Make Festival. Engineer Your Future (March. 17) gives guests the chance to engage in hands-on activities that cover eight types of engineering. Launch marshmallows from a DIY catapult; create a new instrument that makes noise, construct a paper circuit, and more. Guests can also view a family friendly “crappy” robot competition at Hebocon (March 24), and join some of the most fascinating, curious people—from engineers and artists, to scientists and crafters—in a celebration of local maker culture at MSI Chicago Mini Maker Faire (March 31). Learn how to become an innovator yourself by speaking one-on-one with makers and leave inspired and ready to invent. There’s so much to do and see that the Museum will close late, at 9 p.m.
Spring Make Festival wouldn’t be complete without exclusive, 21-years-and older evening events that take the concept of making to a whole new level. Delve into the science of brewing at MSI After Hours: Science on Tap on Friday, March 23, where you can take in a home brewing workshop, and learn the physics behind tossing the perfect game of beer pong. Immerse yourself in Digital Canvas, April 12, for a night of interactive art, where technology and innovation meet creative expression. In a one-of-a-kind event, guests can interact with new media artist DreamBait in a collaborative, four-story digital art mural and party to the beats of a DJ under the swirling colors of a live liquid light show performance.
Unleash your inner maker at Spring Make Festival, March 9 through April 8. For a full schedule and to buy tickets, visit msichicago.org/springmake.
