When Nikki La Ha tells people she dances at the nightclub Cabaret, “they automatically think I’m a stripper,” she says. In fact, she keeps her clothes on, though they don’t amount to much—an outfit featuring lace, fishnet, and heels. At Cabaret’s Friday night burlesque show, she and a handful of other young women flaunt their moves under spotlights around the club. Tall and slender, with raven hair and a deep tan (she owns and manages a tanning salon in Orland Park), La Ha, 25, also tends bar at the River North spot, but she relishes putting on her shows. “A good club dancer is somebody who isn’t shy, likes to be watched, and has a lot of energy,” says La Ha. “And I love performing.” The job is not without its hazards, though, including the occasional wardrobe malfunction. “I have this real short, fringy skirt, and I was dancing and the back zipper popped,” she says, giggling. “I had to smile and pretend my show was over.”
