Nighthawks: The Proprieter

Darryl Petty knew how to throw some nice parties (and had some nice pocket change from savvy real-estate investments), so it seemed only natural for him to open his own nightclub. That was seven years ago, and Crocodile Lounge (formerly Mercury Lounge) hasn’t had a dead weekend since. Situated in the financial district, the Crocodile Lounge morphs from an after-work spot to a sensual hip-hop club as the evening matures. And its snazzy look? “It all comes from me,” says Petty, 39. Originally from West Garfield Park, Petty now resides in Bronzeville, which is also the location of his second popular venture, Blu 47—a contemporary American restaurant/lounge that features live R&B and jazz. And this past July, Petty opened up his third business, a fast-food joint based on his popular chicken wings at Crocodile. Sounds as if the self-made Petty will be busy. “I’m probably too self-made,” he says. “I could use some help!”
