Heather Robinson didn’t get into DJing with the goal of playing house music all over the world. But today Robinson, 37, who spins under the name DJ Heather, ranks among the world’s elites. Her September 16th show at Smart Bar is sandwiched between gigs in Mallorca, Spain, and Bahrain. That she hit it big playing house—a style made popular in Chicago in the early eighties—is “a happy accident,” she says. A 1987 graduate of Evanston Township High School, Robinson remembers being captivated by early house recordings on Chicago radio. After graduating from Whittier College, she started spinning records at the old Artful Dodger in Wicker Park. Today she is the rare DJ whom other DJs pay money to hear. She calls her music “a mixture of warm sounds, vocals, disco, a cappella effects. The key is incorporating all those sounds and making them your own, so no one plays records the way you play records.”
