Dining & DrinkingCurtained-off cabanas are ubiquitous in South Beach; now Chicago is jumping on the bandwagon. The latest place banking on semiprivacy is NV Penthouse Lounge (116 W. Hubbard St.), whose owners were aiming for an August opening at press time. The bar is located on the eighth floor of a building designed by the Chicago/Miami firm Studio Modernista, but getting in is a bit of a maze: patrons must walk down a narrow hallway in which an LED installation flashes digital messages about the bar, then trot through another corridor before being escorted to an elevator and whisked up to NV’s main level, where, finally, they’ll be plopped in front of the 27-foot granite bar. The owners are hoping the 600-foot outdoor patio, featuring five cabanas with views of the skyline, will make the journey worth it. Additional seating includes rooms on either side of the bar reserved for bottle service, and a small Champagne room with a two-bottle minimum that seats about eight.
