I Do!: Chicago Ties the Knot

Some marry for love. Some for convenience. Some because it’s a measure of success.
But for most, it’s because for as long as they can remember, they’ve dreamed of that perfect day.

Since the first couple said “I do,” religion, culture, family custom, and nostalgia have shaped nearly every part of one of the oldest and most commonly practiced traditions in history—the wedding ceremony. Over the past two centuries alone, wedding fashions have changed in ways you might never have realized. For reasons you might never have expected.

The Chicago History Museum invites you to take a look at what’s in, what’s out, and what’s behind the fashion you think you know. Opening May 22, 2010, I Do! Chicago Ties the Knot explores the big day in a whole new way, through approximately 45 ensembles from diverse wedding ceremonies performed in Chicago dating back to the city’s founding.
