12 Months, 12 Pictures, 12 Stories: February

The top story of February was probably the biggest yet least surprising story of 2011: a former Daley fundraiser officially becomes Da Mare-elect, and faces a lot of problems left over from Da Mare.

Actually, this picture was taken in 1989. But this is Chicago. We don’t want nobody nobody sent.

Rahm Emanuel

In February, Emanuel won the mayoral election with 55 percent of the vote, over 30 percent more than runner-up Gery Chico. In October, David Bernstein looked at the man on five and the passing of the torch:

In private settings, though, Emanuel has been more candid, says one close supporter who asked not to be named. According to the supporter, Emanuel once kvetched to him about how the city was in worse shape than he had originally thought. “Rahm feels there was a lot broken that no one was calling Rich on,” the supporter tells me. “But he thinks it doesn’t do any good to say, ‘Look at the mess [Daley] got us in.’”
