90 Miles Pulls Off a Fun, Festive Brunch

Grab some liquor and your most boisterous friends and family.

The shtick Eggs, meat, and all the plantains your Cuban-food-loving heart desires.

The vibe In warm weather, the sun-soaked front patio at 90 Miles’s Armitage location is a lovely spot to plop yourself for a café con leche or two. Now, with chills on the horizon, migrate to their covered and climate-controlled back patio adorned with kitschy signage and a surprising amount of natural light. It’s filled with perky families and boisterous parties of sweats-clad twenty-somethings taking full advantage of the spot’s BYO policy. Bring all your loudest friends. 9 out of 10

The food You will not dine lightly here—not when basically everything comes with meat and plantains. Your best bet is the 90 Miles Special ($13), more or less a sampler platter of the Cuban brunch pantheon’s greatest hits: rice and beans, two eggs cooked to order, fried plantains, and a choice of marinated steak, lechon-style pork, ropa vieja, or vaca frita (go for the tender shredded ropa vieja.) The prospect of an omelette in breakfast sandwich form ($5) disappoints slightly—the addition of onion, ham, and cheese to a pressed ‘wich doesn’t quite culminate in much of anything. Snack on as many mariquitas ($5), crispy thin plantain chips, as you can. 7 out of 10

The drinks Not a table in the place lacked a café con leche ($2.75; you can level up to a 16-ounce cup for $3.25, and it’s worth the extra 50 cents). If you need alcohol, stock up before you arrive on the appropriate pairing for a pitcher of sangria or mojito mix. Note that the sangria errs on the side of overly sugary. 7.5 out of 10

The service Top-notch. Friendly, fast as can be, and totally fun, exactly what you want to pair with that six-pack of Daisy Cutter your friend brought. 10 out of 10

Overall It’s a lively and lovely place to pass a weekend morning. 8 out of 10
