Safe as Can Be

SNOW SHOVELING
“It’s generally a solitary activity. Low risk for COVID-19, high risk for heart attacks.”

SNOWBALL FIGHT
“I don’t know how close you want to be to somebody who’s throwing a snowball at you. I bet you’ll be happy to be six feet away.”

SLEDDING
“Barring sitting on a sled with someone outside your household, low risk. Faces are bundled up in scarves, and you’re moving pretty quickly down the hill.”

Moderately Safe

BUILDING A SNOWMAN
“You’re getting pretty close to people if you’re working on the same area at one time, but still low risk, given the ease of wearing a mask.”

ICE-SKATING
“It’s very easy to ice-skate in a mask. Obviously try to steer clear of people, and don’t congregate on benches while putting on equipment.”

SKIING
“The risks here come from the time in the lodge with masks off, eating and drinking and warming up, or on the lift if you are seated with somebody outside of your household.”

Forget About It

BONFIRE
“In general, when you’re sitting around a bonfire, your masks are off because you’re drinking.”

HOT-TUBBING
“A mask isn’t feasible because it will not stay dry, and a face shield will fog up. You’re also going to be speaking up over the sound of the bubbles — a big extra risk.”
