What You Need to Know About the Chicago Dining Scene This Week

There’s a new contender for hottest dining corner in the city.

Goddess and the Baker (33 S. Wabash Ave., Loop, 312-877-5176) has a lot in common with its Goddess and Grocer siblings—leveled-up eats for both grab-and-go and dining in—but it’s more geared towards lunchers than shoppers.

The intersection of Augusta and California is officially the hottest dining corner of the city, thanks to two openings this past week. First, there’s the Haywood Tavern (2759 W. Augusta Blvd., Humboldt Park, 773-661-1084), an idealized version of the corner tap with cheffy versions of bar food from two longtime friends and vets of Longman & Eagle, Spiaggia, and Blind Robin. But that’s not all—Brendan Sodikoff, as is his way, surprise-dropped C.C. Ferns Coffee (2806 W. Augusta Blvd.), a coffee shop with a lot of doughnuts, housemade syrups, and a chic seating area.

Morsels

Say farewell to the present home of Ed Debevic’s (640 N. Wells St., 312-664-1707), which will leave the River North site it’s occupied for decades for a new spot to be determined sometime this year.

Last fall, a mysterious raid went down in several of Tony Hu’s restaurants in Chinatown—and now we finally have a little more info on what the deal was thanks to a Sun-Times story. The FBI agents who searched Hu’s spots (and his apartment) were looking for evidence of tax fraud, but Hu has not been criminally charged as a result of the raid.

More restaurant legal woes: Brazzaz Brazilian Steakhouse (539 N. Dearborn, River North) has shut its doors days after a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court alleging the restaurant repeatedly underpaid its employees, according to (another!) Sun-Times story.
