What You Need to Know About the Chicago Dining Scene This Week

The Beard finalists are in.

Openings

If you weren’t paying attention, you probably missed the opening of Moneygun (660 W. Lake St., West Loop, 312-600-0600), a new bar from Bruce Finkelman and Craig Golden of Longman & Eagle and the Promontory fame.

For modern Mediterranean fare in the heart of Greektown, there’s now Aviva (310 S. Halsted St., 312-655-1150), from Lorraine Rieff-Liakouras and East Bank Club chef Alan Lake.

Morsels

Fourteen Chicago nominees will contend for James Beard glory when the awards are handed out at the Civic Opera House on May 2. Among them: Alinea, up for outstanding restaurant in its first year of eligibility; Boka’s Meg Galus for outstanding pastry chef; and Jenner Tomaska of Next for rising star chef. The Tribune’s got a full list of nominees here.

After a few months sans head chef due to the abrupt ouster of Diana Davila, Cantina 1910 (5025 N. Clark St., Andersonville, 773-506-1910) has found a new leader in Scott Shulman. He comes to us from California, specifically Los Angeles’s Hatfield’s and Mélisse.
