What To Eat in Chicago This Week: Holiday Edition

There are three meals this week: Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and leftovers.

Tuesday, November 26

Settle the Jewish food score once and for all (or at least until next year) at the 67th annual Latke-Hamantash Debate at the University of Chicago’s Mandel Hall (1131 E. 57th St., Hyde Park). After watching faculty members duke it out over the merits of the traditional treats of Hanukkah and Purim, respectively, make your own picks with samples of each for $5.

Thursday, November 28

Scrambling for a Thanksgiving itinerary? Procrastinators still have time to get in on some of these specials, including full smoked turkeys at Real Urban Barbecue in Highland Park or Vernon Hills.

Friday, November 29

Take a break from Black Friday at Tavernita (151 W. Erie St., River North, 312-274-1111), where they’ll have a special black paella ($17) through the weekend. It’s enough for four to share—use it as fuel to tackle the crazed shopping hordes downtown.

Skip your usual day-after turkey sandwich and go for Travelle’s (330 N. Wabash Ave., River North, 312-923-7705) instead, which tops roasted turkey with walnut labneh, pickled onion, and watercress on an onion roll for $11.

Sunday, December 1

Give and receive at Sprinkles Cupcakes (50 E. Walton St., Gold Coast, 312-573-1600), where, starting today and running through December 15, you can trade a brand-new, unwrapped toy for a free cupcake of your choosing, such as the December-only chocolate peppermint.
