In Chicago Dining This Week: Openings Galore and Pumpkin-Pie Doughnuts

The city gets tastings at a brandy distillery, Cajun food in the French Market, seasonal specials, and more.

Openings

Friday, 11/1: Lafayette (131 N. Clinton St., West Loop, 312-207-6225) is about to put some French Creole into the French Market. The Cajun-spiced kiosk from Hiran Patel (who helped to open the Klay Oven stall in the market) will put out jambalaya, crayfish, and étouffées right across the aisle from Little Goat Bread.

Saturday, 11/2: Your Wisconsin-style old fashioned cocktail can now be a little more local: West Town brandy distillery Rhine Hall (2010 W. Fulton St., 312-243-4313) will begin offering libations and tastings during limited Thursday and Saturday hours.

Monday, 11/4: The Evanston location of Dollop Coffee Co. (749 Chicago Ave., 847-868-8863) will pour starting Monday morning barring their final inspections, making it the fourth outpost for the coffee shop. Grab a cup of Metropolis coffee to go with your Fritz pastries and Hoosier Mama pies—it’s never too early for pie (opening week will see apple, apple-cranberry, persimmon-pear, and pumpkin.)

Monday, 11/4: The Southport Corridor is getting beefed up with the addition of Burger Boss (3210 N. Southport Ave., Lake View, 773-248-2677), a customizable burger spot imported from Elmwood Park. If you’re feeling uninspired, each month, they put together a seasonal burger—November’s is a turkey burger on a brioche bun topped with stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo.

Tuesday, 11/5: Chef John Vermiglio confirmed to us that his new venture with Matthias Merges, A10 (1462 E. 53rd St., 773-288-1010), will start serving European-inflected small plates, pizzas, and pastas in Hyde Park on Tuesday.

Morsels

•Because ‘tis the season for all pumpkin everything, River North doughnut bakery Firecakes will be serving up a pumpkin pie doughnut every day through the end of November. It’s a cake variety made with local pumpkin puree, topped with pumpkin pie filling and candied pecans. The pie-flavored doughnut (pie-nut?) sells for $2.97 until supplies run out each day.

•For a feel-good breakfast, to-go cups of oatmeal at Milk & Honey Café will be on sale for $1.99 starting Friday—and 100 percent of the profits from each will go to the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center. The sale runs all month long.

• Lincoln Park brunch spot 2 Sparrows (553 W. Diversey, 773-234-2320) has a new fall menu on the books. At breakfast, go for a chile relleno stuffed with cream cheese, cheddar, almonds, and cranberries; snag a banana, walnut, and marshmallow Pop Tart for dessert.

• After 10 and a half years of Oktoberfests and pretzels, the Teutonic tavern known as the Glunz Bavarian Haus (4128 N. Lincoln Ave., North Center) has closed.
