This Is a Great Weekend to Shop in Oak Park

The Competitive Foot, a 40-year-old athletic store, is closing with one last big sale. Plus, more than 20 other shops in downtown Oak Park are marking down goods for the Shop Outdoor Sale.

After a 40 year run, Oak Park athletic store The Competitive Foot (102 N. Marion St.; 708-524-0030) will sell its last pair of sneakers on July 20. Tim and Tyna Eggert, the shop’s husband and wife owners,  say they’re ready for retirement and will bid adieu with a Farewell Sale this weekend. This is an “everything must go” event, so expect to find discounts on shoes and apparel up to 80 percent off. The majority of the store’s stock is already gone, but it’s worth a look to see if that last stack of Nikes is in your size.

The sale coincides with Oak Park’s Shop Outdoor Sale, a great reason in itself to head west this weekend. More than 20 stores along Lake St., Marion St. and North Blvd. will be holding sidewalk sales with summer discounts from Thursday, July 17 through July 20. A few doors down from The Competitive Foot, jewelry store Gem Jewelry Boutique (108 N. Marion St.; 708-386-8400) will be marking the entire shop down 10 to 30 percent. Also make a point to stop into CarefulPeach Boutique (1024 North Blvd.; 708-383-3066), a French-inspired home goods and gift shop that will have live music, complimentary cocktails and snacks in honor of Bastille Day on Saturday.
