Poet and creative writing and film professor
Lives in: East Ukrainian Village
Backstory: Born and raised in the small town of Benson, Louisiana, Muench is the daughter of hippie parents who named her after the singer Nina Simone. She has written four books of poetry, including her most recent, Lampblack & Ash, which was picked as an editor’s selection in the New York Times Book Review. She completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Colorado and recently received her PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Despite all her literature and writing classes, part of her doctoral studies focused on modern horror films. She now directs the creative writing program at Lewis University in Romeoville and has taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I’m a vegetarian.

Red wine.

“Popular depressive.”

Shooting pool.

Running, about five days a week.

After midnight. There’s something luxurious about being able to stay up past midnight.

Night owl.

How much do you tip?
Never less than 20 percent, even if the person is terrible. I waited tables for years.

Favorite bar in Chicago?
The Rainbo Club.

Vintage necklaces. I collect them.

I eat too much sugar candy like Runts, Nerds, and Gobstoppers.

I waited tables in the stadium club at Wrigley Field so I’ll say the Cubs.

The hot springs in the mountains in New Mexico when it’s snowing.

Lots of books, several pairs of glasses, barrettes, and many pens.

Last movie you LOVED?
Caché. It was at the Music Box.

Sourdough bread with fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes.

If you could have dinner with three living people, who would they be?
Tom Waits, David Cronenberg, and Toni Morrison.

What’s a fun fact about you?
I’m good at name-that-horror-film.

Guilty pleasure?
The band Dashboard Confessional, because I’m a sucker for spite and sap when they merge in lyrics like “So kiss me hard / ’Cuz this will be the last time that I let you.”

How much was your last haircut?
$12 at Supercuts. I’ve been going there since I was 19.

At which store would you max out your credit card?
I’m too responsible to do that but, probably, at Expedia.com.
