Nighthawks: The Muscle
Pru Brownlee has a simple message for anyone looking to cause trouble at the Cobra Lounge, the gritty hard-rock club where he works as a bouncer (see Best New Bars). “Don’t even try it,” says the 36-year-old ex-marine. One look at Brownlee’s 18-inch biceps, tattoos, and stern gaze, and you get the feeling most people don’t need to be warned. On a recent Friday night at the Cobra, he is greeted warmly by a gang of scraggly bikers wearing metal-studded leather. “They could go to an average spot, cause a lot of trouble,” he says, “but they won’t do it here because they get treated with respect.” When a patron does get unruly, Brownlee will tap him on the shoulder, grip him tightly, and escort him out. “I tell them why, they dispute it, and I tell them to come back another day,” he says. It’s in his interest to keep things relaxed. When he’s staring you in the face, you realize that it’s in your interest, too.
