The other day at a staff meeting we were talking about classic designs that never go out of style (yes, we get talk about this kind of stuff and still consider it work). So, we rhapsodized about Windsor chairs and subway tiles. What’s even more fun is when we come across great twists on classics. West Elm’s Modern Windsor Accent Chair ($399) is a recent tweak-on-a-standard that I love. The lacquered Vienna Side Chairs (available in black and white, $119) from Crate & Barrel are also favorites (an interesting tidbit from Crate’s website: “Originally designed in 1859, this timeless, curvaceous classic is produced in one of the original Thonet bentwood chair factories”). Interior designer Arden Nelson put white Vienna barstools around a kitchen island in a project we feature in our July/August issue —on newsstands now—and it looks terrific. What are your favorite classics, or better yet, updates on classics?
