There’s a new tile superstore in town (well, a bit out of town, depending where you live—it’s in Lombard). This is Floor & Décor’s 28th store in the U.S., and the first one in Illinois. It’s also, at 90,000 square feet, one of the chain’s largest design centers. Floor & Décor stocks every material you might imagine—wood, mosaics, tile, stone, glass, all at factory-direct prices. Denise Fratto, a designer at  Floor & Decor, tells me she has worked in the high-end tile business for 20 years (most recently at the Merchandise Mart), and is impressed with the prices, selection, availability, and uniqueness. How about 12” x 12” travertine for 99 cents (most places sell it for at least $4). Ninety percent of materials are in stock; high-end, special orders arrive in ten days. “Every inch of the store is product. It’s massive,” says Pratto. Luckily, plenty of staffers are around help you wade through it all (design services are free). Will you find tile that stacks up to the samples you fell in love with at Ann Sacks or Fine Line? Who knows? But Saturday afternoon would be a fine time to check it out—Floor & Décor is holding a free Home Design Party from 3-5 p.m.
