Your sitting room becomes your safari with the incredible Animal Chair Collection from Spanish artist Maximo Riera, presented at the London Design Festival last week. Riera built the majestic structures true to size of the animals they mimic, using 3-D computer imaging, mechanized sculpting tools and hand-finishing, including leather upholstery and carving the compressed foam to superbly detail the animal skin and features. An Octopus is currently in production along with the throne-like Rhino and immense Walrus (nearly 300 pounds and over seven feet long), and Riera is adding Lion, Beetle and Whale chairs. The monumental pieces, however, feel more like totem spirits than mere chairs.
