Humboldt Park is becoming the latest hotbed for some of Chicago's most exciting new businesses.

First the team behind Longman & Eagle announced they were opening up the new restaurant Parson’s Chicken & Fish, then tapas restaurant Bullhead Cantina announced a second location in the area, and then I discovered a brand new vintage furniture shop there.

Humboldt House Co. (1045 N. California Ave.) had its grand opening a week ago and is packed with retro furniture and accessories. Self-taught interior designer Claire Tibbs hits thrift stores, estate sales, and hole-in-the-wall resale shops and stocks up on cool furniture and other goods. Back at her shop, they get a quick freshening-up and hit the sales floor.

Nestled among those items is a rotating collection of work by Chicago artists and designers. At the moment, it’s watercolors by Cheri Lee Charlton and jewelry by Elana Riback. And don’t worry if you find something you love but isn’t quite right. The back of the shop is home to furniture refinishing expert Devin Jorgenson, who can make any piece perfect for you.

Humboldt House Co. is open Wednesday through Sunday or by appointment Monday and Tuesday.
