As the flowers outside say farewell for the season, it’s time to focus on indoor blooms. That’s where the new, locally-based company Modern Sprout comes in.

Started by husband-and-wife team Nick Behr and Sarah Burrows, this windowsill planter box has a hidden hydroponic system that automatically waters and feeds three plants of your choice, from edibles such as herbs, berries and kale, to flowers such as orchids, lavendar, and coneflower.

The box itself—available in chalkboard finish, high-gloss white, weathered gray and reclaimed wood—is a clean-lined beauty that will look great in a decor of any style. Prices start at $129 for a plug-in unit and $249 for a solar-powered box.

Available at Sprout Home in West Town, Countryside Flower Shop in Crystal Lake, and online at modernsproutplanter.com.
