This sculptural, spiral-in-a-square staircase was built with reclaimed Douglas fir planks, the welds on its steel railings left exposed "to show the hand, the way that it’s made," says Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects. She designed this loft home in a former industrial building at 2650 W. Belden Ave. for Susann Craig, a manufacturers’ representative for women’s apparel and a devotee of outsider art. Craig’s collection includes the antique wheelchair ("one of my grandchildren’s favorite objects") at the base of the steps.
