1 / 242 Bob Kruse of Lincoln Park: Arlo is a hit in Lincoln Park. His neighbors love him for his energy and loving personality. He simply is a Chicago dog - fun, smart, and wild! 2 / 242 Alexa Botwin of Little Italy: Armani has been the most loyal, obedient and sweetest dog. He is definitely a ladies best friend. Love him. 3 / 242 Christine Franklin of Lake in the Hills: Arnold is a rescued Pitbull. He was so sick due to many food allergies that it took us about 6 months to get him on the right diet. During his early years, on top of being sick, he had very poor training, and bad separation anxiety. Now, he is currently enrolled in CGC training, and working his way to become a Therapy Dog. His calm personality and lovable demeanor makes him the perfect dog for the job. He has overcome many obstacles, poor early training, sickness, fighting BSL's in and around our town. He is the perfect example of a Pitbull, and by far the best dog. He is happiest when he is playing with kids or snuggling with people. Arnold was even featured in the Dailey Herald for an article on staying cool in the summer heat. Arnold is the best dog! 4 / 242 Bob Constantino of River North: AZ is the perfect lap dog, the perfect city dog. When we go to the dog park, she does not care about the other dogs. She goes straight for the humans. All she wants to do is cuddle with others. She makes any passerby smile and pet her. She also spends most of the day resting so she can have the energy to run around outside. 5 / 242 Lisa Livingston McKenna of Oak Park: Baby Jane is a fierce 7lb ball of crazy. We adopted her from a pug rescue two years ago. She is not all pug but she is all awesome. She barks too much, runs too much and defends her toys fiercely from her brother Zeke, a 3 yr old, 60 lb boxer who fears her. Her prozac doesn't really work but we give it to her daily anyway. She is the BEST! 6 / 242 Brittany Blackfield of Boystown/East Lakeview: Badgley (pronounced BADGE-lee, named after one of my favorite designers Badgley Mischka)was adopted from Paws this past January and the best way to describe him is as kindred spirit with a twinkle in his eye! Besides being quite the little people pleaser in the neighborhood (and at home for that matter). He is enrolling this October to obtain his animal assisted therapy certificate to help spread his loving nature to those in need. Although very mild mannered he loves to explore the great outdoors on the weekend, going for hikes, to the beach and canoeing! Chicago brought us together and together we'll continue to enjoy every possible aspect of this beautiful city together. Simply stated, he is the best little love bug ever! Badgley 2012! 7 / 242 Kathy Koester of Old Irving Park: Bam Bam is Chicago's Smile Ambassador, pet rescue advocate and dog about town. With his wide grin and prancey walk, he brings joy to everyone he meets, even turning machismo men into mush. Bam Bam is a pint-sized Pom with personality plus, a real socialite and character to boot. He never hesitates to express himself through interpretive dance, body language or dog-speak, and he enjoys nothing more than a good wrestling match with his best pal Smokey the Cat (hilarious!). Bam Bam is a sweet, well-mannered boy who eats his fruits and veggies and puts himself to bed at night. He loves family time and exploring all the sights and smells Chicago has to offer. He's a fixture on the alfresco dining scene and fan favorite throughout his neighborhood. Simply put, Bam Bam is the best dog in Chicago because he spreads happiness wherever he goes. 8 / 242 Jackie Rassner of River North: Hands down Barley is the best dog in Chicago. Even though he is adopted from PAWS, he was born to be a member of the Rassner family. He is the life of any party, always smiling and loves being petted. He's a total city dog. He's already famous to us and can't wait to be featured in Mom and Dad's favorite magazine! 9 / 242 Alberto Mendez and Jill Lowthian of McKinley Park: Bandit was adopted as a puppy and instantly became part of the family and the highlight of every day. Bandit’s hobbies include sleeping in extremely uncomfortable positions, rearranging his furniture (pillow bed), sleeping with his bone, destroying each and every toy he has, and improvising peeing stances – including, but not limited to, four legs, three and a half legs, and laying down. But what makes Bandit really special is his sweet personality, his up-for-anything attitude, and his love for the neighborhood kids, who refer to him as the “Cow Dog.” 10 / 242 Danielle Giampoli of River West: Bari is the absolute best because he is always smiling, just look at his face! He has the best personality, always playing and pawing to get your attention. Funny/gross side note, he tries to chew used gum when we go on walks! He can find already chewed gum a mile away, which is lovably disgusting! 11 / 242 Amy Keller of Old Town: Barney was found this past December taped up in a cardboard box and thrown into a dumpster. Thankfully, a good samaritan found him and took him to ACC before he froze! When we adopted him this January, he was missing a lot of fur from flea bites, and was very scrawny. He's since grown a beautiful coat of fur, put on some weight, and is the friendliest dog you will EVER meet. We're happy that we gave Barney a well-deserved second chance, and we're even more grateful that he gave people a second chance, too! 12 / 242 David Trotsky of Romeoville: Baxter is a rare dark Chinese Crested Hairless. He is our best buddy. He gets tan in the summer, name one other dog on this list that tans. He bites your nose to show affection. He butters you up for treats. He loves car rides. We also wake up with Baxter next to us with the blanket up to his neck and his head on the pillow like a human. 13 / 242 Kathleen Field of Lake Forest: Not only is Bear Man's Best Friend; he is Chicago's best friend. More William Perry than Richard Dent, Bear graces the scales at just over 222 healthy pounds. All puns aside, Bear is a larger than life dog who has a tendency to forget his size. Whether he is going for a car ride or strolling through a farmer’s market, Bear always seems to draw attention and he savors it. A big teddy bear (with an even bigger tongue), Bear loves being the center of attention and won’t have it any other way. Bear has a heart equally as large as his stature; just like the City of Chicago. 14 / 242 Jamie Aitchison of Logan Square: Beatrice spent the first five years of her life locked in a cage, exploited as a breeder in a puppy mill. Since adopting her in June 2009, she's blossomed into a spunky little diva who loves to play, dance and pose. 15 / 242 Elizabeth Brennan of Palos Park: I am a "devilish mutt", but extremely lovable. My family adopted me and didn't know what they were getting themselves into. More than anything I love a neck rubbed; if you don't rub it I will sit by you with my head in the air until you do! My looks are irresistible, and they help me get all the treats and toys I want. Me and my big brother Angus love to people and animal watch in the yard. We can bounce (literally) around for hours. When my family isn't home, I lounge in my parents bed - best place for a nap. I hope I get to be in the magazine; that would be so cool! 16 / 242 Stephanie arndt of Chicago: Bella Boo is the perfect city dog - she is small, doesn't bark, friendly to all people/kids, dislike the cold as much as i do. She is always happy and does the best tricks to make you laugh plus you can't help but smile when her ears are up at full attention. Also, in the winter, she becomes my personal feet heater. 17 / 242 Margo Willard of South Loop: If the South Loop were to elect a mayor, people and dogs alike would unanimously nominate Benny. His outgoing disposition and charismatic nature make him friend to every dog he meets. Part puppy, part politician- this shih tzu mix knows how to charm and work the neighborhood like a pro! 18 / 242 Jacquelyn Graham of Logan Square: My name is Bentley Cooper and I'm the best dog in Chicago because I love to hang out in Chicago's dog-friendly spots like: Montrose Dog Beach, Clark Street Ale House, Bucktown Dog Park and Logan Square's Farmer's Market. Bentley has been an amazing companion, he is loving, loyal and an absolutely perfect addition to my family. 19 / 242 Summar Jonas of Lincoln Square: Bert is a little Chihuahua with big ears and a giant heart. He was (luckily) rescued from an abusive owner when he was just a few months old, then spent his first couple of years in New Mexico living life to the fullest on a 10,000 acre ranch with my parents. He passed his days riding 4 wheelers, chasing the horses and herding the cattle while keeping the cow dogs at goats in check. Though Bert enjoyed country life, we feared for his safety, due to his pint size, and decided to bring him to Chicago to get a taste of the big city. Well, he was like a fish out of water for several weeks - jumping at every horn honk, speeding bicycle, or laughing child. But before too long, he adapted to life as a city slicker. He learned to walk on a leash and settled for chasing squirrels instead of sheep. Bert is the best dog in Chicago! We love Bert more than we could ever express and are grateful for the honor to share our lives with him. 20 / 242 Moira Tannen of Rogers Park: Hi, My name is Betty & I live & work with my best friend, Moira. Every morning, she & I drive to our job. She is the administrator/nurse in a special place for people who are often very sick & mostly looking for a reminder of their own home. I try to be that reminder. Sometimes, I go with folks to therapy, trotting alongside their wheelchair. What I really like best though, is sitting in a friendly lap. I like to take little walks down the hall & visit with someone who might be too weak to get out of bed. I stay until they feel better. Even though I'm very small, just 6 pounds, my heart is big & at the end of the day, I feel happy to be so loved & needed by the people I comfort. 21 / 242 Tedi Fingerman of Buffalo Grove: My dog is the best because he is the sweetest thing. He is not a dog in this family, hes a human being. He poses for the camera and always wants to protect his family from any danger he might search out. He has the best manners and makes any sad day flip around with his smile. He is the best dog in the world. I wouldnt ask for any better puppy than him. 22 / 242 Kristen Mitchell of Clarendon Hills: Blue is a chubby, happy-go-lucky guy who cares less about chasing girl dogs & more about chasing rabbits. His keen sense of smell leads him to all corners of our neighborhood, & there’s no one in a three block radius that hasn’t met or pet Blue on one of his adventures. Most of the people I don’t even know by name & vice versa, but they know Blue, our disappearing act, & greet him with a belly rub. He even got to know the community police department & took a ride in the back of the cop car after escaping from our yard to explore the local park—head out the window, tongue out & ears flapping in the wind! Blue has taught me that no one is a stranger, & our neighborhood is full of wonderful, amazing people. You just need to follow your nose once in a while! 23 / 242 Sarah Levee of Lakeview: From the Taste of Randolph to the Sox Game, Bo has done Chicago. During the summer he is a fest and neighborhood favorite- he has been in more pics than any dog in Chi. He is big, happy, and always looking for fun, just like Chicago. 24 / 242 Lauren Woertz of Plainfield: He is a living teddy bear. So cuddly and sweet. Boone knows several tricks, including when he gives "paw" like in the photo. He is such a cutey, we get stopped everywhere we go by passerby wanting to meet him. He loves to play with other dogs and go for rides in the car. And despite his mop, Boone doesn't shed a hair....thanks to the hypoallergenic poodle in him. The best dog ever. 25 / 242 Evgenia Zarozhnaya of gold coast: Despite his sourmug Boris is jovial, comical and amiable, among the most docile and mellow of dogs. He is willing to please, although he retains a stubborn streak. The bulldog is very good with children. Boris is very friendly towards strangers, but gets protective at home. 26 / 242 Maralyn Owen of River North: Bosley is known as the "Mayor of River North"...he's the biggest dog in the neighborhood at 130 lbs. and loves everyone he meets on the street. Everyone knows his name and he makes everyone smile everyday on our four daily walks!!! He's also pretty funny and loves blondes (golden retrievers) so he's looking for a baby mama for sure!!! Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs rule!! 27 / 242 Lylann Baughman of Highland Park: She's spunky and sweet and she's good enough to eat...just like the cheese she was named after! 28 / 242 Angela Tomasino of Humboldt Park: Bruce Wayne is a millionaire playboy by day and vigilante by night. He keeps the city safe from super villains with the help of his trusty butler, Alfred (not pictured), and never fails to come running when he hears us call out "to the bat cave!" Also, his ears are much larger than his pointy little face, making him irresistible to adoring fans. Bruce Wayne is the best! 29 / 242 Terese McDonald of Chicago: After a failed ruptured disk operation last year, Bruiser became paralyzed from the waist down. Through therapy and hard work, Bruiser has regained the ability to wag his tail and to stand, we are not giving up on him and his ability to one day walk again. In the meantime, Bruiser gets around town on his custom wheels. He has never lost his playful attitude and has adapted well to his disability. He loves the attention that the wheels bring to him and is the poster dog to show other dogs and their owners that you still can have a full life even with disabilities. Pick Bruiser as the best dog in Chicago because this is how he rolls! 30 / 242 Lindsey Davis of Wicker Park: Bubba is Chicago's best dog because he brings a smile to everyone's face that meets him or sees a picture of him. He has so many fans, many that have never even met him. Oh, but if they did-they would see how silly this Frenchie is and would love him even more! Bubba is a people's person and does not have a mean bone in his body. His heart is bigger than his ears, believe it or not! This frog dog loves to play with ice cubes and his favorite squeaky monkey. His favorite treat is Greek yogurt, loves listening to the oldies station, and loves to meet new pals on long walks. (And, of course, a fan of all Chicago sports!) 31 / 242 Charles Lutz of West Loop: Buddy is currently on his fifth and final home. He had a rough go of it for a while, as some of his previous owners abused him, and some of them couldn't afford to care for him. But now that he is in a comfortable "forever home", he has really started to shine. He lives to run, and has never met a tennis ball he didn't want to chase. This dog has serious hops, as you can see from his photo. He is just as comfortable playing in the mud as he is laying on the couch and watching TV. To know Buddy is to love Buddy. He likes to welcome his friends over with a "happy dance" every time he sees them. He is truly the Best Dog in Chicago. 32 / 242 Lars Juhl of Ukrainian Village: Buddy survived a car crash in the mountains of New Mexico back in 2005 that unfortunately took the life of his owner and my best friend Dan Stephenson who was killed instantly that night in January. After being rescued by a truck driver several days later, Buddy was brought back to Chicago and has stayed with us ever since. Now 13 years old, blind and having a hard time moving around, he is still the happiest thing on this earth and a daily reminder to us on how to live life. He truly is Chicago's top dog! 33 / 242 Mary-Lisa Sullivan of West Town: Buehrle is sweet, funny and very handsome. Aside from running with us, his favorite thing is sticking his head out of the back sunroof of my truck. And he is named after one of the best Sox pitchers ever - Mark Buehrle. Buehrle and Mark are both perfect! 34 / 242 Louise Ahrendt of West Loop: It took me months to see it, and for some time could not understand all the compliments he gets, but not only does he have a great face and smile, but a fun personality! I thought it was "puppy crazies" at first, but this silly french bulldog will still kick it into high gear, put his ears back and turn into a greyhound. He will do laps either around our condo or up and down our outside condo hallway (psst, it's against the rules, but he's determined and French too!). It a great way to get a good laugh each day. 35 / 242 Patrick Dunham of Uptown: Butch The Mayor has never met a constituent he doesn't love. Whether it be his fellow canines in the dog park, the cats of the world, or any human, he believes in instant friendship and never stops trying to get out the vote. He is, at once, the grossest and most wonderful companion, and his humans treat him as one of the gang. Butch loves parties, dog parks, owning the couch, being included in everything, and very short walks. He dislikes plastic bins, anything with wheels, and the vacuum, and he makes his displeasure known. Best of all, Butch makes everyone smile. 36 / 242 Lu Hur of Streeterville: Even at his ripe young age, Caesar displays the look and attitude of a grumpy old man. He gives this look to my husband and I each time we come home. 37 / 242 Trang Timmerman of Park Ridge: Capers is a 4 year old male goldendoodle. He’s not a normal dog; he is a doman (part dog, part human) and is the biggest ham. He is ready to poise for a picture at any moment. Capers is the sweetest and friendliest dog, he has never met a person or dog he didn’t like. He’s a big fan of fruits and veggies, his favorite are strawberries, blueberries and carrots. He loves playing Chunk-it in the backyard, going to the dog park, walks around the neighborhood, car rides, but he is happiest by our side no matter what we are doing. Capers is everything you ever wanted in a dog and more. 38 / 242 Kathry Graszer of Wauconda: Casey the Sheepdog is the ultimate family dog. She knows the difference between her toys and everything else we leave laying around the floor. There has never been a chewed shoe or stuffed animal. She comes running with just a click and a cookie. Casey loves to play with all the neighborhood dogs and children. She only barks when she's playing. We have to spell in front her because she loves to go for car rides, and even likes her vet! She's a dream! 39 / 242 Andrea Lum of South Loop: Chace is awesome Dutch Shepherd. He loves kids, loves running around with neighborhood dogs, playing fetch, rolling around in the grass before darting around in circles to burn off some energy. He'll even model some Geico sunglasses in the shade while he cools off during Randolph Fest. Then, he just wants to cuddle up on the couch with mommy and daddy. 40 / 242 Ashley Cohen-Lewe of Glenview: All my life I had been wanting a dog. Since I was 18 I have struggled with depression. My parents used to tell me, it was good I didn't have a dog because I wouldn't be able to take care of one in my state. But two years ago, my depression became very serious. I couldn't pull myself out of it. My parents were at a loss. Instead of thinking a dog would hinder my recovery; they thought it would improve it. I always wanted to rescue a dog. My whole family is allergic to everything. After months of searching and playing with different dogs, we finally found our Chandler. He was 5 1/2 months old when he came home with us. He brought me back to life. My family, who never wanted a dog, is now in love with our 5 pound ball of fire. My parents love taking him for a walk because he prances when he walks and gets insulted when others don't stop to look at him. He is 100% a mommy's boy and I have to say he was worth the 24 years of begging. 41 / 242 Amanda Gerwig of Naperville: Like his famous basketball playing namesake, Charles has been known to eat an entire family Thanksgiving dinner by himself – leaving the rest of the house with only green bean casserole to be thankful for. And while he also has never won a championship, he makes every day entertaining and brings a smile to my face just thinking about him. He is the best dog, and I am lucky to share my life (and dinner) with him. 42 / 242 Phil & Erica Wacker of Bucktown: This PAWS rescue is 40 pounds of adorable, lovable mutt that came to Chicago via Oklahoma. His most awesome qualities include assuming the "Frogger" position (with hind legs splayed), smiling at every jogger that goes by, and showing house guests how excited he is to see them by losing control of his bladder. 43 / 242 India McQuoid of bridgeport: She has human eyes, people lips, a mohawk, bloomers, a beard and mustache! Came from the streets of Pilsen. Best little love bunny scraggle creature. 44 / 242 Alexi of Buena Park: His winning combination of a sparkling personality, rugged good looks, and athletic prowess make Charlie the best dog in Chicago. He is always on the hunt for a good butt scratch and something to rest is heavy noggin on. If you see him around town, ask him for a high five. But watch out, you may walk away with a slobbery pair of pants. 45 / 242 Andrea Nair of Lakeview: Charlie loves everyone he meets and lets you know it with plenty of licks. He's happiest frolicking at Montrose Beach, as you can see in the picture. It's hard to believe he was in a kill shelter shortly before we adopted him, but thankfully his sweet personality led him out of there and into our home. 46 / 242 Caitlin gath of WIcker Park/Bucktown: Chicklet is the best dog simply because she is mine. On May 23 Chicklet became a permanent part of my life. I had just moved to the city six months prior and was slowly starting to settle into a new routine: new job; new apartment; new life. But something was missing. And it didn't become complete until Chicklet arrived. She eased herself into my life like she'd always belonged. Now I can't imagine myself without her. Chicklet was surrendered to Animal Care and Control, then rescued by a wonderful local organization, One Tail at a Time. Now she is living the dream and can regularly be found prancing around Wicker Park, begging for treats and avoiding the waves at Montrose Dog Beach. When she's not out and about, little Chick is snoozing on the bed, only comfortable when you finally join her. She is a Chicago pup through and through! 47 / 242 Martha Nelson of Mount Prospect: Chief is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, or a Toller. The breed is the smallest of the retrievers - he weighs just under 40 pounds. He is a happy family dog - he loves running around with our teenage son, and going to obedience class with our teenage daughter. He is very social and likes to perform tricks. He goes nuts when he sees water, he sings and pants hoping to swim and retrieve a bumper. Again and again. Tollers are awesome dogs. 48 / 242 Tamara Matthews of Logan Square: Chloe is a compassionate companion and, to me, the best dog in Chicago! Life was pretty tough when she lost her previous owner (my mother) and had to transition from being a Colorado lap dog to a Chicago city dog. But nothing stops her—not even a mass-cell tumor, hip dysplasia, or a heart murmur. She always has a happy lick and tail wag for whoever she meets and at nine years old is still as sprightly and enthusiastic as a young pup. Her groomers call her a “special girl” and that she is! Not only has she brought infinite joy to my life, but she delights everyone she encounters. That’s what makes her the best. 49 / 242 Jill Monoscalco of Morton Grove: Chompers loves to play. He has a fantastic personality and is friendly to everyone he meets. He enjoys treats (a little too much) and is very spoiled. He puts a smile on everyone’s face and makes those around him feel loved. 50 / 242 Erica Winkler of Roscoe Village: Chubbs is the best dog because she is the greatest cuddler! She makes the goofiest faces and is always entertaining in her own cute way. She captures the attention of everyone whenever we go for walks, my boyfriend and I have tagged her the 'Roscoe Village Celebrity' because random people on the streets will recognize her and remember her name! 51 / 242 Kate Buckley of West Town: My Clare is the best dog because she has brought me many laughs (and outbursts) over the 6 years I have had her. She is the ONLY dog I know that actively watches TV. Yes, actively. When Swifter mop commercials come on, where ever she is, she sprints to the TV, puts her paws on the TV stand, stands up and watches wagging her tail fiercely. Clare helped save my brother's life once, brought him more joy than a lot of other things in this world. He's gone now, but I see him in Clare. 52 / 242 Yevgeniya Cherkasskaya of Des Plaines: I adopted Cloud almost three years ago from Almost Home Foundation. Every moment with Cloud since that time has been a joy. Cloud is the most affectionate dog I every had, he is also very social with other dogs and with humans as well. He just likes being part of the scene. 53 / 242 Pranav Ramanathan of Wicker Park: It's hard to imagine our lives without Coco, a beautiful Shar-pei mix rescue. Her unabashed displays of love, loyalty and happiness are a constant reminder to appreciate the simple, bare necessities of life. 54 / 242 Jesus Campos of Berwyn: When Coco isn’t on-duty as the household’s watch dog at her post (the front window) she keeps busy by strategically hiding her chicken-flavored treats around the house. Coco’s favorite sound is that of her lease jingling, which can only mean her favorite activity is to follow—a walk! Coco enjoys going for short walks around her block, since her short legs don’t allow her to get much further without needing to be carried back into the house. Coco also enjoys the wind running through her fur while she sticks her face out of the car window when she’s on her way to the train station to pick up human-friends. 55 / 242 Kristy Tomala of West Loop: Cody is one of the most loving, wonderful dogs I have ever met. He loves people and other dogs and enjoys spending time at the city's parks and of course at the Montrose Dog Beach. He's pretty much happy anywhere people or dogs are. Cody and I also frequent different animal shelter fundraising events and try to help other animals in need as much as possible! 56 / 242 Natalie Gordon of Bucktown: Cole is a petite black lab with white whiskers, and everyone (animal and human) just LOVES her. Cole just loves soaking up Chicago. Whether its going to a street fair and watching a cool band, begging for rib tips or frequently the dog pools at Churchill Dog Park- she's always having fun. One of her human friends even just PROPOSED to her, she is so much fun! Mainly though, Cole is just SO Chicago. Cole loves wearing wigs, wearing sunglasses, North Avenue Beach, relaxing on floats (check photo), swimming, getting sandy, ICE SKATING, boating, boating, diving, motel parties and even visiting retirement homes, Check out www.facebook.com/cole.ctc.7 for her facebook profile! 57 / 242 Mary O'Connor of West Loop: We just moved to Chicago in May, and Cooper has adjusted beautifully. At first, he was unsure of the sidewalks and the traffic. It only took him a couple walks to figure it out. Also, at least 5 times a day people pet him and say how cute he is. He kind of expects it now. 58 / 242 Chas Cohn of Lincoln Park: I adopted Cooper from my hometown SPCA in Newport News, Virginia. Cooper was rescued from Michael Vick's neighborhood in downtown Newport News where dogfighting is common. Cooper is very loyal and affectionate and brings a smile to many people I pass on my daily walks around Lincoln Park 59 / 242 Laura of river forest: Cooper, our Chocolate Labrador Retriever is the best dog because he loves the Chicago Cubs!!!!! 60 / 242 Jeff Molitor of River North: Cooper Wonder found me at the end of 2010 at the Anti-Cruelty Society. A transfer from TN Cooper is a Beagle with stubborn tendancies but a charmer that makes you forget the morning grumpiness - it simply adds to his unique personality. Cooper howls when happy, bays when excited and wishes he was set loose on neighborhood rabbits. Why is he the best? Because he epitomizes Chicago - rough at times, intriquing to most, appealing to anyone who crosses his path, and can enjoy a steak like no one's business. 61 / 242 Ryan of South Loop: Dante joyously greets me every time I come home. He is always in the mood to cuddle. He enjoys long walks on the beach. He helps me clean up spills in the kitchen. He shares my belief that there's never a wrong time for a nap. But simply... my dog loves me unconditionally!! 62 / 242 Renee of Skokie: Desi is our tiny granddog, (a chipoodleterrier we believe) who spends half his time with us in Skokie and at his home in Hollywood California when his 'mother'(our daughter) travels for work. There is no comparison between life in Skokie and in Hollywood and yet this guy picks up his routine here or there as soon as he recovers from his 'sleepy' medicine for his plane rides. An exceptionally bright and funny pooch, melting hearts on both sides of the country. 63 / 242 Amanda Miller-LeNaour of River North: Dexter is a 4 1/2 lb morkie that has been a city dog his whole life, from living in NYC as a puppy to doghood in Chicago. His penchant for urban environments has made him somewhat fearless when it comes to taking the streets and it doesn't take much for him to light up people on the streets by just being his happy go lucky self. He's friendly, always willing to go up to anyone who wants to pet him or give him a hug and has been known to brighten the day of the many local retailers and restaurants he visits. Life in the city can be hard, but this little guy makes other people's days just a little bit brighter. 64 / 242 Carol: Here are the best Chicago dogs, because their human dad is from Chicago, they love Chicago Hot Dogs, and they love to watch the Cubs with us. They like to visit Chicago when they can. Yes they are little hot dogs themselves! 65 / 242 Mariea Murlowski of River North: Let's face it, no one could possibly deny a face like that. Dozer is the best dog in Chicago because besides his wrinkly, snuggly bulldog appearance, you would never guess he's also a skilled athlete (ricocheting off beds and couches, romping around with his canine friends) and has an unparalleled ability to simultaneously steal your heart and stink up a room. Dozer is the ultimate Chicago dog and loves exploring his River North neighborhood with great enthusiasm and his trademark waddle. But most of all, he makes an unforgettable impression on every person he meets with his lovable demeanor and bulldog charm. 66 / 242 Vincent Anzalone of Chicago: Dude Law loves people because they can rub his head and his belly but mainly because Dude loves food. You could say Dude's a foodie but that implies he's picky. Dude is not. Give Dude any snack and you will have a power cuddler by your side. 67 / 242 Joseph & Dunnia Zator of South Loop: Hi, my name is Duke, I am a 14 year old Belgian Melanois and I am known around the South Loop as the George Clooney of the neighborhood! I love to go for walks around Prairie Avenue with my buddies, and take in the sights and sounds of the Sloop. On occasion I have been known to walk around the loop, and especially enjoy going on the Mercury Cruise for Dogs up the Chicago River. On any given day you can find me relaxing at Grant Park, the Shedd Aquarium, or the 12th St. beach. I am a huge Chicago Cubs fan, and never miss a game with my family. My owners think I would be a great candidate for the best dog of Chicago because I am friendly, smart, handsome, loyal, and above all genuine. Basically all the qualities that make Chicagoans, Chicagoans! 68 / 242 Kelly Mathews of Woodridge: Dusty is a wonderful rescue dog and mix of many breeds. He's a little over 100 lbs but the biggest baby you've ever met! He's done nothing but bring joy and love to our family since adopting him over 5 years ago. 69 / 242 Angela Sims of Ashburn: Gotta love my standard poodle Egypt, who is a possessive, opinionated, shrewd, funny, loyal, arrogant, talkative, entitled, show-ready diva. I can't live without her. 70 / 242 Kirsten Agnello-Dean of South Loop: We adopted a sick, tiny mutt of a puppy from Paws Chicago last year and she's turned out to be one of the best things we've ever added to out life. She makes us treasure the little things and keeps us from taking life to seriously...proof that cuddles are better than cash, socks and bottles can be endlessly entertaining, and that a romp in the park at the end of the day is more than enough to make you smile. Plus, she's adorable. 71 / 242 Alicia Silva of Chicago neighborhood: Ella isn't a fan of wrinkle cream. Even though she's a Shar Pei, she's know as the puppy-potamus. Ice is her favorite treat. 72 / 242 John Myers of Old Town: Elvis is the King of Old Town. Elvis is a year and a half old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and takes advantage of everything this great city has to offer. Whether he is running along the lakeshore or swimming at Montrose Beach, Elvis always has a big happy smile on his face. We love to go to the local festivals and walk around, although it is tough because he always draws a crowd of people. When we go to the dog park he finds the smallest dog and never leaves their side, as if he is protecting them. Elvis is a great dog for the city because the trains and noise don't scare him, but is gentle to all people animals and especially children. You won't see many of his kind around, but if you do, stop and say hello because they are the best dogs in Chicago 73 / 242 Richard Petitte of Lincoln Park: He loves every person and dog he meets, he was housebroken at 8weeks, comes when I call him, Sits sometimes, is the best looking dog by many people stop me on the street and he is just a good guy. He was named after my friend from the Class of 73, ElkGrove HS. Three weeks before graduation Emilo Camadeca was riding to school in a camareo and was in a head on and died that day. He was one of my best friends and everyone loved Emil. He was going to be a priest so I named Emil after him. You have to meet him-he is very special. There is something about Emil! 74 / 242 David Jewison of Lakeview: Emmett has constant energy, some of it is immature, some his temperament as a Golden Doodle. I think he's smart, I think he's not so smart. For a dog intelligence test I placed a treat on the floor, covered it with a plastic cup and told him to get the treat (if they don't tip the cup to get the treat, they have some learning to do). Emmett ran to the cup, picked up the cup and ran away to chew the cup, he left the treat. Perfect. 75 / 242 Yvette Pina of Pilsen: Enzo was adopted from the shelter Save a Sato in San, Juan, Puerto Rico. After having endured life on the streets of San Juan, Enzo is very happy to have a home with a comfy bed, regularly filled bowl of dog food, and never-ending love and affection. Enzo’s favorite activities include; licking yogurt containers clean, playing with his best friend Wiley and going to playcare at Bark Chicago. Enzo loves exploring his new dog-friendly city Chicago. Enzo can often be seen being walked in Harrison Park in Pilsen and eating ice cream in front of his favorite ice cream store in Bridgeport, Scoops. Enzo is the best dog because he lives life to the fullest appreciating everyday he is no longer homeless. Through his Facebook page he raises awareness about satos (street dogs in Puerto Rico) and advocates for pet adoption. 76 / 242 Rachel Wike of Southport Corridor: A true Chicagoan, Ernie loves to enjoy the summer by hanging out on the deck, birdwatching, and guarding the bird feeder from squirrels. 77 / 242 Brenda Storch of Schaumburg: Fabi was very ill when he was a puppy. The dr. finally told us he had to chose to live. Fabi is now 2 and he is a healthy, happy, feisty little dog. He is brave and grateful. He is quick to forgive. He shows me how to be a better person. 78 / 242 Kelly Michael of Logan Square!: My dog is the best because of how resilient he is. 5 years ago this September will mark the anniversary of him being shot by a police officer and losing both of his right limbs. Despite this action, he survived and is up and running - literally, running! He holds no grudge whatsoever towards humans and loves meeting other dogs who want to play. He does physical therapy weekly at Integrative Pet Care, gets massages from Canine Massage Chicago, and I treat him like a regular, four legged pitbull. He's extremely strong, both physically and mentally, and he is my soulmate and best friend. Without Fifty I don't know where I'd be, and this is one dog who truly is THE BEST because he lives his life happy as can be! In his free time, he is also a huge advocate for the pitbull breed and the discrimination they face. 79 / 242 Colleen Woods Papke of Lakeview: Have you smiled today? Our rescue dog Finnegan (part basset hound) puts a smile to your face. From Homeword Bound 10 things we love about Finnegan: 10 His “connect the dot” freckles 9 His “Baseball Mit” Paws just 2 f them 8 His “Ankle Fat” that has no purpose 7 His “Frito-like” hound body odor 6 His Hound “grunts, groans and whines” that turn into a yawn 5 His “Stubbornness” 4 His love of all “humans and animals” 3 His love of” food”, anything for a 3 calorie treats 2 His pliability droopy skin, jowls, ears etc. 1 His laxidasical personality 80 / 242 Marnie Shure of Streeterville: The number of hearts Fiona has melted is itself a near-infinite figure, but where she really excels is convincing non-dog lovers (or even those with a fear of dogs) that she is the pooch who can change their minds. With a gentle disposition and desiring only the simplest of pleasures, Fiona's favorite activities are both playing endless games of fetch with a stuffed pug doppelganger and falling asleep sitting on your feet. As gentle and loving as she is, though, "Fi" is also undeniably tough: in June 2012, she suffered heatstroke and was, according to her team of vets, the first dog they’d seen to ever survive the severe condition. Currently two months into her recovery, she is once again a happy, healthy pet; now, though, she’s also a testament to her breed's unexpected strength. 81 / 242 Leslie of West Loop: How do I explain how magical Fozzi is? Take any dog you know and multiply all their best qualities by at least 15 and you have Foz. In his early days he was a street walker in Akron, Ohio before I adopted him for $35. Needless to say it was the best $35 I have ever spent. The best part about him is he is always happy and loves everyone he meets, human, canine and feline. Fozzi enjoys hanging out at the dog park, doing tricks for chicken jerky and lounging. He also loves going out, people watching on dog-friendly patios and trains for any upcoming swimming competitions at Montrose Beach. He is a big dog in a small dog's body. Everyone who meets him loves him, he has such a zest for life and fabulous personality. I am thankful for him every single day. 82 / 242 Christina of Streeterville: Any brother-sister duo named after a J.D. Salinger novel is destined for awesomeness. But these two really are the greatest little dogs that ever lived. Maybe it's because I've always treated them like people, but their personalities are seriously near human. People often remark that they don't act like small dogs or puppies - no obnoxious yapping or anything. Unlike the real Franny and Zooey, though, they refrain from chain-smoking and are quite well-adjusted individuals. 83 / 242 Brett M. Buckley of Wicker Park: A picture says a thousand words, or in this case, 150 or fewer. Frank, an 18-month-old Australian Kelpie (Shepard/Dingo, crossbreed. Seriously), is not only the unofficial mayor of Wicker Park, but is the head of the Wolcott Street neighborhood watch. Frank's journey in Chicago began with his adoption from the Anti-Cruelty Society, which rescued him from a kill shelter in Oklahoma some months prior thereto. With his new "leash" on life, Frank enjoys sniffing and peeing on basically everything, including other dogs at the Wicker Park dog park (it happens), his daily half-hour walk with Jenny and Co. from Wicker Pet, and a rack of ribs on the Twin Anchors patio, where his name-sake often broke bread. Named after Sinatra, the original Chairman of the Board (google it), and with a face like that, what else need be said? 84 / 242 Kate Currin Seiferth of South Loop: Fredo Corleone got his name from the weakest and unintelligent Corleone brother from the Godfather movies. We laughed because he was the last Chihuahua left at the pet store. When we first got him home, he jumped off the couch and broke his leg. Fredo loves nothing better than a Chicago-style hot dog and Portillo's French fries. But after a recent pancreatitis diagnosis and a couple days in the animal ER, he is on a strictly bland diet. As you can see from the photo, he isn’t happy about it. He is a South Loop Sox fan and constantly wrestles his brother Sammy Sosa the Shetland sheepdog over the classic tale of which team is better, the Sox or the Cubs. After some rough times, Fredo is still the nicest Chihuahua in the South Loop and probably in Chicago. 85 / 242 The Gawne Family of Uptown: Our dogs are the best because they are all about their family! There is nothing that makes them happier than when we are all together, walking to the Lakefront, stopping in the park to meet our neighbors and (dog) friends. 86 / 242 Brenda Storch of Schaumburg: She is pretty and smart. She loves herself and has no complexes. 87 / 242 Kristen Weber of North Center: Gracie is a little social butterfly with lots of doggy boyfriends who loves to chill with her friends at doggy daycare. She loves taking walks in our neighborhood, North Center, and especially loves the summer so she can chase squirrels and rabbits. She even loves to run through sprinklers! 88 / 242 Julie Woertz of South Loop: Gracie is sweet, intelligent and very loving to people and other animals. Gracie is a brown and white Boston Terrier. She is 6 months old and 16lbs. Her eyes just melt your soul and her demeanor is tender yet funny. Literally, I get stopped over 20 times a day when I walk with her around the South Loop or down Michigan Avenue. 89 / 242 Mark Dankowski of South loop: Gracie on the left and Leyla on the right. They are the cuddliest buddies in the world. 90 / 242 Katrin Owen of Palatine: Greta Garbo is the BEST dog because she brings city edge to the suburbs; she has attitude but is gentle; she is a clown but dignified; she doesn't talk but she speaks volumes; although she wants to “be left alone” she does not want to be alone! She is the ultimate best friend. "The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog." George Graham Vest 1870 91 / 242 Kathe Walton of Uptown: In 2009, Grizzly was facing euthanasia at a rural shelter due to overcrowding. She was sick, frightened, matted, filthy and despondent. She was also quiet, calm, housetrained, and good with cats. And since then Grizzly has blossomed into a gentle, loving, resilient, intelligent dog who is good with other dogs and people, respectful, tolerant, strong-willed, and loyal. She has a Canine Good Citizen certificate and is an Ambassador Dog for Safe Humane Chicago. She knows several tricks including sit, stay, down, come, leave it, and wave. She is also skilled at playing on the beach, rolling in the grass, frolicking in the snow, and lounging on the couch. She revels in every ray of sunshine, devours every treat like a gift from heaven, and will smile and tail wag at just the sound of her name. She is a beautiful, furry bundle of joy and happiness! Best. Dog. Ever! 92 / 242 Julie Ost of Evanston: Sometimes it seems like Chicago is home to the most canine loving chefs, so Hamilton never wimpers when I tether him just outside of my favorites restaurants in this city. He is sort of a "foodie" breed and love people watch, and besides, experience has taught him that pretty soon someone will succumb to his brown businessman eyes and walk right out the place with a delicious juicy steak or lamb gyros all his own for a special price. Hamilton knows his score is on the house evertime as long as he raises his righ paw and gives the smiling samaritan a high-five. He will later burn off all the calories sprinting, unleashed down the shore of Montrose dog beach. He swims here too, fetching his bobbing tennis ball from the waves, surely dreaming of more Chi-town treats. 93 / 242 Mike Stitt & Kate Toboja of River North: Hank isn't entirely canine, but undoubtedly a social butterfly. He peruses his River North neighborhood, greeting fellow pups and people alike with paws up, tongue out and infectious smile framed by his distinguished beard. Bonus points for the recent discovery that his sister from the exact same litter lives a block away! 94 / 242 Liz Sechrist of Wicker Park: Hank is in love with life. He is the most easy going dog who just always goes with the flow. He lights up every room he walks into and makes friends with dogs and humans a like wherever he goes. If you are having a bad day leave it to Hank to brighten up your day with his happy attitude and extremely unique personality. Hank is a human in spirit and a puppy at heart. You will fall in love with him the second you meet him. 95 / 242 Marah of Ukrainian Village: Harley is little, distinguished, and a little challenged. He's a puppy mill rescue who has the dog version of MS. This means we carry him up and down the stairs and he has to wear little shoes when he goes out, but that gives him personality and character. He's an amateur botanist— meaning he loves to sniff plants—a little rock and roller—meaning he loves to go in the Empty Bottle and, no joke, loves Huey Lewis And The News—and is particularly fond of licking strangers' knees. He's a little challenged, but he's our little man, and we love him—just like Chicago. 96 / 242 Jessica Stapp of Lincoln Square: Harold was rescued from a puppy mill 2 years ago. He was completely unsocialized. Every day since I got him Harold has come with me to work at Kriser's. At first he would run, bark, and pee when he'd see a new person or dog. Now, after doggie classes and lots of socializing, Harold comes up to greet each dog and customer at the stores. He solicits for pets all day long. He brings lots of joy to his family and friends everywhere he goes. 97 / 242 Justine Boney of Logan Square: Harold Baines is a true Chicago dog (no, not that kind!). His goofy, affable personality makes everyone fall in love with him, making him a positive pit bull ambassador for a breed that usually only gets negative attention here in Chicago. Whether he’s making eyes at everyone and their ‘dawg at Superdawg, schmoozing at events supporting local dog rescues (his pet project, if you will), or trying to casually walk into as many local businesses as possible on his daily walks, he’s a real dog about town. With the way he loves to shake hands and kiss babies, you’d think he’s running for office (Tippecanoe and Baines, too!), but he just wants to be Chicago’s top dog… literally. Also, he's a diehard White Sox fan. Peep his most prized possession (aside from his Kong): an autograph from human Harold Baines! … just don’t ask him about Ozzie. 98 / 242 Mindy Williams of Albany Park: Henny brings a smile to my face no matter what kind of day I'm having. His energy is astounding, allowing him to leap from the floor to my waist in a single bound. He is always my happy little guy and charms everyone he meets. 99 / 242 Natalya & Chad Bright of Logan Square: Hoosier is the best because she is a Hoosier, wiggles her butt whens she's happy, sounds like Yoda when she growls, heavy sighs whens she's bored, double high fives for a treat, is frequently mistaken for a boy but doesn't mind, runs faster than a cheetah and loves us unconditionally. 100 / 242 Sophie Leigh of Wicker Park: We rescued Huckleberry from Chicago Canine Rescue in May 2011. At six months of age, Huck was in the shelter with his sister. When we met him, he gave a big hug and wagged his tail, but we could not yet take him home because of a Parvovirus outbreak in the shelter. A week later, he had not gotten sick and could come to his new home. Huck loves the the park, the beach, the snow, Wicker Pet daycare, and sleeping in the bed. 101 / 242 Kate Cassidy of Naperville: Named after a rock god (Iggy Pop) and a patron saint of soldiers (St. Ignatius), how could this pup not be awesome? Iggy is unique and unpredictable, strong-willed and stubborn - and let's face it - downright adorable. His charm knows no bounds, and he wins over every person he meets. His mug is his money maker, and bitches be falling at his feet. Fifty percent Pug, 50% Boston Terrier and 100% bad ass, Iggy is Chicago's Top Dog. 102 / 242 cleste jensen of w. rogers park: they keep my feet warm at night, not really necessary at the moment, and are always happy. excellent guard puppies, greeting eveyone. they show enourmous potential, and soon will learn to sit on command. unfortunately, they show no interest in algebra, but i am confident that they will apply themselves in the future. 103 / 242 David Staral of Ukrainian Village: Hi, This is Ilse, my owner wanted me to write this personally. I think I'm best dog in Chicago because not only am I a loyal companion and life long Chicagoan but an avid Chicago sports fan. I also enjoy sun bathing in the Chicago summers at most of the dog friendly parks around my city. 104 / 242 Jenna Piasecki of Albany Park: After a couple weeks of fostering Isaac, our black lab mix, we couldn't imagine life without him. He brings such joy to our home. He has such a great personality and people of all ages love him the minute they meet him. He won't hesitate sitting down to let kids pet him in our neighborhood. Our dog walker says you could illustrate a book with all the faces Isaac makes. He really can tell us just how he feels by looking into his eyes. He's always there to put a smile on your face and does his wagley tail dance every time we walk in the door. He loves life and is happiest outside whether it's playing with other friendly dogs, laying outside soaking up the sun or taking long walks. Living in Chicago is great, but having a dog like Isaac makes it all the better! 105 / 242 Katy Klassman of Old Town Chicago: Ivy is a magical, tiny hornless unicorn. Even those who normally don't care for dogs cannot resist her energetic sweet charms and when they fall, they fall hard. She's the official shop dog of GREER Chicago where she rules like a beneveolent diminutive princess. Whether running Usain Bolt-ish rings around your feet or regarding you with a fascinated head-tilt while leisurely perched on her tiny chase longue, Ivy is a small, furry dollop of love and that's why I think she's Chicago's Top Dog. 106 / 242 Raquel Jex of River North: I rescued Jack 2 years ago from a shelter. He was very abused before and very scared. He is loyal, protective, and very sensitive to my every move. As part mini doberman and part Jack Russell, he has the instinct to protect me, but the intelligence to be easily trained and disciplined. I can't imagine my life without him in it! 107 / 242 Lucie Milota of Lakeview: Meet JAKE… Jake is the best companion to have in the city of Chicago. He loves making friends, flirting, outdoor cafes, biscuits, cocktails, cold beer and a fancy meal. He relishes walks down Division Street with his humans, taking in the scenery as it has some of the best people-watching Chicago has to offer. Jake loves to take short strolls by the lake where he barks at the joggers who give him a wink and a wave. An occasional attempt at swimming at the dog beach usually winds up with a blow dry and crunchy snack. Compact and cuddly at a mere 7 pounds, Jake is a cool city dog just waiting to be discovered! 108 / 242 Clare Morichika of Ravenswood Manor: Jake was adopted from PAWS 4 years ago. He was horribly abused, underweight, and afraid of everything. I like to think we saved each other since I was going through a very difficult period in my life. Today, Jake is happy and healthy, and all the "girl" dogs in the neighborhood just love him, as well as anyone who meets him. He has the kindest heart, and is the most patient dog I've ever known. Of course, also being devastatingly handsome doesn't hurt! Jake is a member of our family, and goes everywhere with us. He just loves doggie beach, riding in the car (his favorite), and playing with his friends. We are so fortunate to have him in our lives. Go Team Jake! 109 / 242 Paul of Oak Lawn: Our English Bulldog J loves life, is always relaxed and always gives us a good laugh. 110 / 242 Eddie Ham of South Loop: Jesse has a heart of gold and loves to say hi to everyone (dogs and people) when we go out.He always gets peoples attention and puts a smile on their face regardless if they are happy or sad.He is smart and acts like he is human or gives you the look that he knows what situation is going down.He is a rare spotted dachshund and well known and loved in the south loop community. He is popular among the tourists as well that love to stop and pet or take pictures of him. I say he is the doggie mayor of Chicago becuase he has short legs and walks around the city like he owns it, sort of like our current mayor =) 111 / 242 Rebecca Skoch of Wicker Park: Gmail search results for "Josie is" ...scaring herself when she farts, the first google search result for "miniature aussiedoodle," going as Seabiscuit for Halloween, puppysnorking, sleeping in my lap, unsure about elevators, trying to eat bumblebees, getting jealous of people hugging without her, brushed into a fluffy bearcloud, convinced the bedroom carpet is her napkin, tired after crashing the wedding photobooth, in trouble for eating my needlepoint project, the mayor of bearville, world's best dog. 112 / 242 Karen Bucher of Andersonville: Jude is awesome. When he was 7 weeks old, he was rescued from an alley suffering serious injuries to his leg and shoulder. Despite his rough start in life and the amputation of his front left leg, Jude is the sweetest, happiest dog and is well-known in our neighborhood and very loved by his family and friends. He loves swimming at the beach, car rides, hogging the bed, walks around Chicago, and of course, being a Chicago dog, hot dogs. We love pretty much everything about him. 113 / 242 Steve & Allison of Bridgeport: Many people in this contest suggest their dog should win because they're great with kids, saved a bus load of nuns or because they like hot dogs and mustaches. But, I submit to you Junebug. Her under-bite, constant cuddling and puppyish charms may fool, but make no mistake: she's a complete and unrelenting terror. Junebug has eaten the wall, twice, the spackel to fix the wall and a bag of cashews. She has destroyed rugs, records and rented air mattresses. Junebug has burrowed her way into the back of the couch where she stores the remnants of our shoes and will to live. She is also the sweetest, most loyal and kindest dog anyone could ever hope to be tormented by. 114 / 242 Katie Quinn of Mt. Greenwood: We pawsitivley have the best dog in Chicago because she’s led us to discover more of our gorgeous city. Born in Indianapolis, Junie found her true calling as a Chicago dog as soon as she crossed city limits. Junie loves calling Chicago her home and takes advantage of the many dog friendly areas the city has to offer. Her favorite places to run and play include Chicago Park District hot spots like Mt. Greenwood Park and the farm behind the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences. Junie feels right at home at the farm, racing through cornfields and hunting down the occasional stray baseball from neighboring White Sox Miracle Field. Just as comfortable in water as she is on land, Junie is also hot under the collar for Belmont Harbor and Wilson Beaches. During the dog days of summer, she appreciates cooling off in magnificent Lake Michigan. 115 / 242 Joseph Giannini of West Loop: Just look at that face! Junior is one of eight puppies and the love of my life! 116 / 242 Veronika of River North/Cabrini Greens: As a rescue from the Chicago ACS, she has been my best friend for over 10 years with her love, affection and energy. She makes everyone smile when we go for our walks and where-ever she has been boarded. She is obedient, super smart, thankfully never seriously sick and has a positive impact on most people. 117 / 242 Dawn Sherr of lakeview: I rescued him from the city pound and he thanks me everyday by giving kisses every chance he gets! 118 / 242 Carmen Gioiosa of Lincoln Park: How many Chicagoans wish for 20 inches of snow every winter? Kendall does; she is the dog that will make you fall in love with Chicago winters. The sheer joy on her face as soon as those first winter snowflakes hit the ground makes even a lifelong Floridian feel “warm”. During the 2011 blizzard, Kendall owned the streets of Chicago and was quick to remind you to stop and “smell” the snow—no snowball hit the ground, no snow mound left untouched and neighbors could count on Kendall to help dig them out. Even our streets were guarded so no harm fell upon the precious, white stuff that she burrowed into. To Kendall the city never looked more majestic. Many of us adults don’t get the chance to feel like kids again, but Kendall’s excitement is infectious and soon you too will find yourself wishing it would snow 20 inches! 119 / 242 Jennifer Ballard of River North: This rambunctious 2 year-old Anti-Cruelty Society rescue first caught his mother's eye with his handsome looks, but it is his charming personality that ultimately stole her heart. Keyser is best described as a canine comedian. He has gained quite the reputation around the city dog parks for his boundless energy and playful spirit. His shameless flirtation has earned him V.I.P. status at several local businesses. In the summer months, Keyser relishes long walks at the beach and is especially fond of trotting aside joggers and bicyclists. Above all else, Keyser is a loyal family dog who provides immeasurable joy and laughter to all that have come to know and love him. He is undeniably Chicago's Best Dog. 120 / 242 Sammee Wright of Lincoln Park: He has the biggest heart! He loves everyone he meets, and of course, he's a CUBS FAN!!!! 121 / 242 Hon. John Fritchey of DePaul: Kobe came to me from an Indiana shelter via a local shar pei rescue organization about three months ago. While a lot of people tell me how great it was that I rescued an abandoned dog, in many ways, I think Kobe has done more for me than I have for him. The bond that he has developed with me and my daughter is tremendous; he has quickly become a core member of our family and my life. Chicago politics can be a tough business. It's great knowing that I've got unconditional love waiting for me when I get home. In my mind, Kobe definitely deserves to be Chicago's top dog. I know that he's mine. 122 / 242 Julie Justison of Roscoe Village: He's not always the most well-mannered, but he's definitely got the most heart. Between being part fish and wrestling with "his" cat, he's definitely got personality! And he's just one giant dork—but he's MY giant dork. 123 / 242 Lore' Solano of Burbs - Batavia: Double the love from Kyra and her daughter Savanna! Like the flowers in this photo they bring joy and happiness to everyone they meet. Whether they are doing a Alzheimer’s walk in Chicago or being entered in a dog show or pet contest they shine as a true Chicagoan would. Words cannot fully explain how much we love these furry princesses or how much unconditional love we receive from them. There is nothing like the love of a great city and great dog. 124 / 242 Tracy Wolniewicz of Loop: LaLa was born to make people happy and has a way of connecting that I have never scene! We live in the loop where our walks to our park take us past constant commutor traffic and buildings packed with workers.LaLa looks up into the eyes of all who pass her and on a daily basis she instantly makes other start their day with a smile and or the calm of giving and receiving love from an animal. LaLa has countless regular loop friends from the office building we pass by, they all know her by name and stop to say hello and now many have taken to bringing her treats. She makes everyones day better and is missed if we are on vacation. LaLa brings what's best in dogs to those in the loop and is so loved and adored by all! 125 / 242 Janina Rivera of Melrose Park: Shes a pure-bred & loyal Puggle that is the sweetest. Once being released from a hospital after my 6yr old suffered a horrific medically negligent trauma that almost cost him his life Lexi helped him regain his independence by working with him during his Physical therapy to relearn to walk & be mobile again. She also stood guard over him every night when he slept. When he has breathing episodes Lexi will pace back & forth till his breathing has become normal. She can also dance, seriously! 126 / 242 Anne Eisenberg of Des Plaines: Libby is a 12 pound rescue Shih-Tzu from St. Louis, Missouri. When she arrived, she was unkempt and her hair was matted. She had suffered a lifetime of abuse and neglect. She is the best because she still loves people in spite of this. Now her life consists of spa days and an occasional bite of filet mignon! 127 / 242 Allison Rice of Edison Park: Lila is the best dog because despite having a very tough first year, she came into our family and immediately fit right in. She has filled our lives with such happiness. Lila is such a pleaser and asks nothing more than human companionship and to be loved. I could not have found a better, sweeter, nicer dog had I searched the world over, Lila is the best! We are so lucky to have found her! 128 / 242 Amanda Rambo of Monee: Lily started as a foster dog in our home in the cold month of February. Picked up as a stray in southern IL, she came to us with a broken pelvis, fur that was dyed hot pink and blue and a horrible internal infection that left her unable to eat or move for days. The tattoos on the inside of her hind legs lead us to belive that she was either a hunting dog or a puppy mill mother. Despite all her injuries and lack of socialization she fit into our home with our other 2 beagles and she has become one of our family members; we just couldn't adopt Lily to another family! Lily has overcome a lot of fears;it has taken her 5 months to sit and cuddle with us on the couch and is still scared of some noises. She loves her new life that allows her to live in the comforts of a home and enjoy belly scratches whenever someone is willing to scratch! She is just a doll and we couldn't imagine our lives without her! 129 / 242 Anne Wanicek of Lombard: She is loyal, agile, sweet and wonderful not to mention a beauty. 130 / 242 Emily Young of Lincoln Square: In early March as I walked Lola just one block from my apartment I was hit by a car in the middle of Clark street. Lola was fine (Thank God!) but I dropped the leash on impact and fortunately, a witness grabbed Lola and attempted to pull her out of the street to safety. Lola wouldn't budge. She sat next to me in the middle of the street until the two witnesses help carry me to the side of the street while we waited for the EMT. She stayed next to me refusing to move anywhere without me. She kept this up throughout the recovery sensitive to the fact I couldn't get around as I used to. In addition to her extreme loyalty, there's the obvious- she is ridiculously cute, she is also brave, fun and absolutely quirky. Well versed in all Chicago areas, Lola currently resides in Lincoln Square, but has also lived in Lincoln Park and River North. Lola's an adopted bulldog mix. Key word: adopted. There are too many awesome dogs in the city at shelters and such not to go that route (sorry for the PSA) Thanks for the consideration! 131 / 242 Kelly Johnston of Plainfield: Our little pooch is the best because she has such an amazing personality and look to her that can put a smile on anyone's face. She lived in a very bad neighborhood as a newborn and most of the other puppies did not make it. Since the day we got her, she has been nothing but a healthy bundle of joy! We couldn't imagine our lives without her :-) 132 / 242 Lynn Galvan Ringley of Chicago: Lola is the best dog because she's not only smart, she's cute, she's friendly, she loving and so mild tempered, especially for her breed (Boxer). She gets along well with other dogs. Everyone that meets her just lovers her. She's in great shape and loves to play and cuddle! She has an awesome personality, ask anyone that's met her! 133 / 242 randy michaels of gold coast: it is believed louie was born blind, which makes his survival of hurricane katrina rather miraculous. after his rescue, i adopted him from a shelter in michigan. years later, he and i survived a car wreck together on an isolated road in west virginia. slightly injured and of course blind, he walked three miles with me until we found help. louie is an inspiration to everyone who meets him - his kind heart, happy spirit, and insatiable appetite for love is never dimmed by his occasional bumping into walls. he is incredibly smart, and his sharp little brain makes a mental map of new environments - once he bumps into something, he notes the obstacle and never bumps into it again. louie is brains, heart, sweetness, survivor, and pure joy. his eyes are useless, yet he smiles at all times, every single day. i'm his "guide-person", but the truth is that he's actually shown me what it is to truly SEE. 134 / 242 Paul Cannella of Chicago: Lucy May is Chief Product Tester for locally owned and operated PoopBags.com. Lucy took over this key role at my company after company founder May passed away. This vital role ensures that all products sold meet the PoopBags and Lucy seal of approval. We make sure they are eco-friendly, and we strive to carry only products that are made in the USA, like The Original PoopBags! Personality-wise, Lucy is fun, friendly, and character. She barks by the door when she wants to go out, and once 6 pm rolls around, she is barking to tell you its dinner time. Other than that, I never hear a peep out of her! Lucy is simply an awesome dog! 135 / 242 Vivi Topalis of Arlington Heights: Lulu is a white Havanese and is the sweetest and most loyal dog that you could ever have. She is great with kids, grandparents and loves chasing her ball in the yard. We never owned a dog before and getting Lulu last year was like adding energy and another addition to the family. This picture was taken on the beach during a recent vacation at Hilton Head Island, SC, with an I-Phone. We hope you pick Lulu! 136 / 242 Ana Larena of Lakeview: Here's why: Luna has always been very independent. All she needs and wants is good food, a comfy bed and lots of love. She choose the living room as her place to sleep and be in the house and even if you called her from the bedroom to come to you, she wouldn't and won't. She's a little lazy... But one night, she was about 2-3 years old, she heard me cry. She had heard me cry other times before, but she felt this time was different. And it was. I was about to split with my boyfriend at the time and I was totally heart-broken. Literally heart-broken. So she decided to walk into my bedroom and all she did was place her head on the mattress next to my pillow, and closed her eyes. She didn't "say" or do anything. I cried myself to sleep... When I woke up the next morning she was still there, asleep on the little bedside rug I had. She stood by me all night. That day I saw Luna's beautiful soul :) 137 / 242 Shannon Burke & Timothy Haberkorn of University Village: Mac is a human trapped in a dog's body. His favorite spot in the house is in the living room, on the couch, watching TV. One day we're going to walk in the door and he'll have a dry martini in his paw while he watches the evening news. 138 / 242 Caitlin Tatterson of River East: Macy is one lucky dog, pun intended. My husband and I rescued her from a shelter a little over two years ago. The process was a bit unconventional, as I was selected by my company to adopt a dog that would be sponsored by the company, Draftfcb, in support of our partnership with the Humane Society. Amongst the program's many benefits is one big one: Macy gets to come with me to work everyday!! When she's not working in advertising, she loves sniffing out River East, running around the Lakeshore East dog park, hanging out with her buddies at the Pooch Hotel West Loop and spending time in New Buffalo, Michigan. Macy is the best thing that ever happened to us and we would recommend pet adoption to EVERYONE! 139 / 242 Lana Poskin of Elmhurst: She was the runt of the litter but you would never know it by her spunky personality! Honestly, & this is totally cliche, but I couldn't ask for a better best friend! 140 / 242 Erin Dorholt of Albany Park: Maesie is the sweetest, gentlest soul you'll ever meet. She loves snow and she'll love you forever just for rubbing her belly and giving her a treat. And even though she can be stubborn on the leash, which I often refer to as "resistance training" for myself, it's only because she knows what's important in life: taking time to smell the roses. Or in her case, every single blade of grass in the neighborhood. And she's my best friend. 141 / 242 Katie Romans of West Town/Noble Square: All dogs are the best but our beautiful adopted one-eyed mutt Maggie has brought so much positivity into our lives the past year. After eyeing her at The Anti-Cruelty Society for weeks we decided to make her part of our family. Her love for the outdoors, people, and other dogs has encouraged us to get to know our neighbors and enjoy everything our wonderful neighborhood has to offer (parks, restaurants, architecture, etc.) and other dog friendly areas of the city as well. We love exploring the city with a dog by our side and couldn’t imagine it any other way. People yell her name out car windows, change direction on the sidewalks to come meet her, and admire her humble beauty. In addition to her unconditional love, she has inspired me to start my own business after loosing my job. Maggie is no doubt Chicago’s Top Dog! 142 / 242 Lisa Butler of South Loop: Because she is my forever puppy, full of love for anyone who is willing to receive it. There's not a hand or face she won't lick. On a daily basis, our Chicago walks, bike rides and errands add on an additional hour to stop and chat with folks who just want to 'love on' mahogany. She's so daggone cute and friendly that we are regularly stopped for photo ops; whether its rolling down Michigan Ave. via bike basket in her pink bike helmet and doggles or just her fabulous furry self! But, all this paparazzi action hasn't changed Mahogany; all 3 pounds of her is all heart! She is so loved by strangers; a little girl fell and scraped her knee playing in oz park; she only stopped crying when Mahogany came over with licks of love! 143 / 242 Lindsey Pearlman of lakeview: meet maisy "the peanut". at age 13, she is the world's teeniest, tiniest, most delicious ball of adorable you ever did see. she does not do any tricks, lead the blind, sit on command, or defend the home from strangers. she was put on the planet for one reason - to be completely, utterly, 100% cute. when asked "what is she", i respond, "ewok/squirrel/poodle". her eyesight and hearing is beginning to fail, but to all who know her, the peanut is perfection. 144 / 242 Frank Ungari of Barrington, IL: We got Marco at a shelter. His birth date was unknown. That winter, he wandered on to our partially frozen lake and fell in. For 25 minutes he fought for his life as we frantically broke through the ice to get to him. He never gave up. That day we decided will be his official birthday--December 17th. 145 / 242 Katie Jacobs of Roscoe Village: Marley has the biggest heart around and loves trotting around Roscoe Village, poking his head into the store fronts as he passes, and getting attention from anyone within eye sight of him. He definitely has swagger! He would play fetch and go swimming all day long if he could. He may look tough sometimes, but he’s a real softie. It’s hard not to smile and laugh at his spunky personality. Whenever we are at the vet or the pet store to buy food, he always has to stand at the checkout counter with me – literally, with his front two paws up on the counter just to get the attention of the person working behind it and hoping to score a treat. 146 / 242 Lorena Villa of Evanston: She embodies Chicago´s immigrant past and present. The city´s cosmopolitan feel and ever changing population landscape. She shows how the American Dream is still possible, true rags to riches tale do exist. Martina was born in Mexico City and somehow ended up at a rescue center. We adopted her and has followed us ever since to wherever we go. A year ago we moved to Chicago and she feels it was the best decision ever. Martina loves every inch of the Windy City. Walks now have a whole new meaning to her. Instead of interminable concrete and no natural beauties at sight, she now has plenty of grass to chew on, snow to roll over and sand to dig up. We are absolutely sure she was destined to live here so she could become the most grateful Chicagoan dog that ever lived. 147 / 242 Celeste Calogero of Libertyville: [Revised Photo attached] My name is Max and I am a 7 month old Bichon/Shih Tzu mix. My parents are avid Chicago Magazine readers, and I want to be featured in your Best in Chicago issue! I love to parade around the downtown parks and beaches and show off my cute self to any person or fellow dog that is interested. Admirers constantly tell me how adorable I am and I'm always happy to roll over and let them scratch my belly. My Dad wishes he could get a dollar for every smile I get! I don't shed and according to the AKC, I am one of those hypoallergenic dogs that don't make people sneeze; my owners agree that I am the perfect pet. My pictures portray my fun personality and I hope to get selected as a best dog in Chicago. I’m as cute as cute can be! Max 148 / 242 Jennifer Hirsh of Bucktown: Max is the quintessential Chicago dog (minus the sport peppers!). Much like our equally lovable city, Max is a mix of various breeds which combine together into a ball of friendly, frenetic energy. An adopted (rescue) Chicagoan, he equally enjoys strolls around Bucktown, playing at Churchill Dog Park, and naps in the grass. A meld of Midwestern charm and a big city sense of adventure, Max is the BEST Chicago dog! 149 / 242 Ariela Coles of Oak Park: McGee is a rescued Lhasa Apso mix with a lot of spunk. He has a super cute under bite that matches his ridiculously cute personality. Although McGee's life started off rough, he quickly bounced back and is a very happy dog. He can be a little bossy when he's hanging with his doggy friends, but LOVES hanging with people. McGee is strong willed, smart, playful and a total goofball. Everyone in the neighborhood knows him, and he will greet anyone with kisses and role over to get his belly rubbed. Maybe it’s because he was a matted mess when we adopted him, but he really enjoys being groomed and will jump in the tub for a bath the minute you say the word “Bath” (he also loves the blow dryer!). He's the best because he makes us smile everyday and is a furry ball of love with a few quirks mixed in! 150 / 242 Donna Feldman of Deerfield: McGinnis is my service dog and he desires to be Chicago's Top Dog. He has done what he is trained to do(89commands),and more. When I couldn't pull the fitted sheet on and off,he did. He'd carry my dirty linens to the utility room. Even when I can carry them, he takes the bundle from me because that is his job! He helps to unload the car. McGinnis has also improved my social life. He got me out of the house and introduces me to people. His aura of kindness, thoughtfulness, and selflessness endears him to others and he includes me. Whether he is wearing his vest or not ("just"a dog),he cares for me and about me. He is as beautiful inside as outside. McGinnis will be a wonderful representative for Chicago. McGinnis deserves to be Chicago's Top Dog. 151 / 242 Amy of Lakeview: Miles is full of life! His energetic personality brings a smile to everyone he meets. He loves to play, run on the lakefront path with his mom and dad, and cuddle during thunderstorms! Miles is the most loyal and loving companion and never fails to cheer us up when we are having an off day. He is a handful, but we love him for it because his energy helps keep us young and moving! Miles is so silly, so sweet and easily the best puppy you'll ever meet! 152 / 242 Justin McGuffin of Logan Square: Milhouse is the best dog in Chicago because he's always on duty. He makes us laugh, cheers us up, and keeps us safe, grounded, and sane. Our lives are exponentially better with him around. 153 / 242 Vicky Kujawa of Lake Forest: Miss Juno Sophia was adopted by our family a few months ago after seeing her picture on a local bulletin board. It turns out that her mom, dad and pug brother all passed away over the last 3 years, and her grandma was trying to find her a good home where she would get a lot of the attention that she craves. I finally gave in and brought her home. She likes a LOT of attention and being Top Dog would suit her well! 154 / 242 Kei Hotoda of Logan Square: Mitsu is a happy Shiba Inu. She is Chicago's best dog because of her foxy looks, sparkling intelligence, and huge personality! She's attracted over 450 followers on Instagram and her portrait was featured in the RedEye last winter. Her favorite musical piece is the theme to Beethoven's Seventh Symphony; she howls along to the piano version. And of course, she loves to play with all dogs and people, but especially the big dogs (her best friends include Sinbad the Pitbull, Oji the Akita, and Jackson the Black Lab) and especially people who shower her with attention. She is Chicago's foxiest social butterfly-dog! 155 / 242 Lalima Chemjong McMillan of Irving Park: Moa's a Boston Terrier but not the traditional black and white one! She's a red Boston who loves people with all her heart. Her friendliness, energy and excitement know no bounds which is evident in her jumps and stretched arms and legs as she says “Hi!” to you. Moa rules every dog park she goes to and brings smiles to all her dog friends and the people around her. True to her middle name “RANI” meaning queen, she loves sitting on any elevated spots she finds to be her throne. And from that throne, her greenish eyes radiate her sweetness and just a little bit of mischief. 156 / 242 Molly Hayes of Lakeview: Moe rescued us 2 years ago. We are so lucky that he chose us- he is hilarious, always making us laugh. Moe is a very gentle dog, except for the night he got this hot dog- the greatest night of his life! 157 / 242 Rocky Kujawa of Lake Forest: Moses was adopted by our family from Pug Rescue when he was about 6 years old. He is a very handsome boy; a former Westminster judge even commented about his double curled tail and trace down his back! Moses is very smart, too! He is a former TV star; WCIU-Dog! 158 / 242 Julia Johnston of Lombard: "Dad, you trust me right?" were the words I prefaced my father with before I walked in holding a little black puppy. I was 18, he wasn’t thrilled. Now four years later they’re inseparable. When I tell people Moxie is a beagle-lab they hesitate, I assume they’re trying to digest how that would work. She actually looks like a black lab puppy, save for the white patch on her chest you wouldn’t know she’s part beagle until you saw her nose in action. Our neighbor’s claim that Moxie’s howling at all things human/animal scared away a potential intruder that kicked in their backdoor. My Mom says her name is Moxie because "She had a lot of moxie bringing a dog home!" but really it’s from “Moxie Crimefighter” which is the name of Penn Jillette’s daughter (of Penn & Teller). I cut the vigilante part but then again, maybe it fits. 159 / 242 Mark Rosenthal of Edgewater - Chicago: He was abandoned at a couple of weeks of age to Chicago Animal Control. A animal control officer decided to foster him and my wife and I were lucky to find him at the shelter. Although as a former curator at Lincoln Park Zoo I worked with lions and tigers, he was the very first dog that I have ever had. Whenever he is out he never fails to draw the cute dog compliments and I think it has gone to his head. He has the heart of a lion and now runs the house. We consider him a top dog in every respect. 160 / 242 Michael P. Murphy of South Loop: Mulligan is the best dog I have ever owned because she is truly a sweet dog with a great heart. She gets along with all types of dogs, is 100% trained (photo taken while she was a puppy), is gentle around kids and adults alike and is a certified service dog at only 1 year old. She can work with Alzheimers patients and young children and is so loving. 161 / 242 Cherie Getchell of Andersonville: We adopted Munches (a Terrier-American Eskimo-Poodle mutt) from PAWS in 2011, and though he took awhile to warm up to us (he initially hid on top of our shoes in our closet), once we all got to know each other, his true, gregarious self shined through. Munches is friendly, cuddly, playful, and a joy for people and dogs to be around. Munches enjoys playing with children, loves to explore and swim in Lake Michigan, run the lengths of the Montrose dog beach, and walk around our lovely Andersonville neighborhood. We will never know why Munches was given up for adoption, but we know for sure that he has enriched our lives in ways we never could have imagined! Munches is truly the Chicago’s top dog and his personality and style makes Chicago proud wherever he goes. 162 / 242 Yosha DeLong of Streeterville: Murphy is one of the happiest dogs ever. His job and purpose in life is to make people smile and bring a little sunshine onto the streets of Chicago. He knows no stranger, everyone is his friend worthy of a cuddle. 163 / 242 Hermine Leiderman of Deerfield: My wish to be a grandmother has been granted in the form of our handsome granddog Murray, now a ten year old miniature schnauzer. He lives with me and my husband several months every year, and gives us tremendous joy in retirement. He is intelligent, well trained, playful, affectionate, cooperative, adaptable and intuitive. We love to spoil him with long walks, runs in the school yard, frequent brushings and showers (that he requests), special food and homemade treats. Our neighbors look forward to visiting us to see him, and enjoy taking care of him when we're away. He entertains us by howling at sirens, doing tricks and alerting us to the arrival of strong thunderstorms or fireworks by running for cover. He's so easy to manage and direct that he was cast as a costar in a pilot made for a TV game show! Murray is a sensational traveler, who willingly jumps into his sherpa bag to fly to California, Deerfield or anywhere else we travel at a moment's notice. We hope he'll be part of our family for another decade, because we all adore him so very much! 164 / 242 Joel Parrett of Bucktown: All dogs rock, however, Mr. Myles Fancypants is more than your average dog. He is a little man stuck in a miniature wiener body. His boyish good looks will have you throwing his ball forever. Just look at his face in this photo. 165 / 242 Angela Haines of Lakeview: Na'cho was rescued by Chicago English Bulldog Rescue he was used as a stud dog and raised in a puppy mill. Despite his rough start he still loves everyone. He's a sweet happy wiggle wiggle wiggle pooch that just wants to make everyone smile. 166 / 242 Kerry Cragin of Lincoln Park: I rescued Nellie last summer from a foster family who had found her in Southern Illinois roaming the streets by her lonesome. How this dollface could end up alone baffles me every day. She has earned quite a reputation due to her goof ball tendencies and reputable looks. I get stopped on the street every single time we go out from people naming references where she must be from: Target, Little Rascals, Bud Light commercials, General Patton's dog...it goes on. She's my best friend and I've even found myself looking over to see if she's laughing too when I watch New Girl. I'm not ashamed! Originally named Eleanor for Eleanor Roosevelt because I find her inspirational ("do one thing a day that scares you", anyone?), Nellie has been my inspiration as she has truly fulfilled my every day! And, she's a pretty good wing-dog. Seriously, a beer commercial dog? What guys wouldn't love her? So, here's Nellie, or Spuzette, Nell-Bell, Spuds Mackenzie, the Bull, the Beast...regardless what you call her, she's certainly Chicago's Best Dog. 167 / 242 Maggie Bono of Park Ridge: Nellie was always a good dog. Two years ago, Nellie was diagnosis with diabetes, causing her to develop cataracts that has completely blinded her. But that never stopped Nellie, in fact it made her stronger. She had to teach herself how to navigate her way around the house and learn how to walk up and down the stairs. Most dogs would accepted that they're old, and given up, but Nellie has always been a fighter and never stopped trying. Nellie continued to try, and after awhile she learned how to avoid the furniture in our house, and she memorized how many steps it would take to get to our back gate. Every year we go to Northern Wisconsin, but we were hesitant to bring her along this year, because there is a lake there and she likes to swim. But Nellie without the slightest amount of fear, marched straight into the water and decided to swim like she had in previous years. Nellie had no idea where she was going, but it never slowed her down. Nellie has always been a good dog, but now she's a great dog. 168 / 242 Logan Chambers of Portage Park: My dog can be described in one word: loyal. Whenever I get sick, he always stays by my side. Whenever i cry he nuzzles his nose on my shoulder. He comes when he is called and protects us. He may be small, but he packs a punch when it comes to protection 169 / 242 Katie Jacobs of Roscoe Village: We took Nesta into our house when she was six months old after she had been neglected by her original owner. She loves to get scrappy in the back yard and play fetch. The higher up in the air you throw the ball, the better! She is a very loyal dog; when I am sick she will lay by my side all day long no matter what. She is a protector of the house; she will growl at a car driving by just to let it know that this is our home. She is a regulator; she will keep her brother Marley (and fellow blue pit) in check when he is acting hyper and annoying! She is a lover; the more you hug and snuggle with her, the louder she will make moaning noises to let you know how comfortable she is. 170 / 242 Eric Kessel of West Bucktown: Newman is an ambassador of good will and happiness in our neighborhood. He is at home in a crowded street fest, fetching the ball at montrose dog beach, playing with our toddler, or chilling on the couch. Trained but never tested to be a therapy dog, Newman has the greatest demeaner any owner could ask for. Named after the Seinfeld character, he truly is a goofy teddy bear! 171 / 242 Adriana Villarreal of New East Side: Nigel is the best because he's a Pembroke Corgi, and because everyone loves him. He'll do anything for a ball. He learns tricks in seconds. He's ridiculously photogenic. And because, regardless of those stumpy legs, he is top dog in the house. Even our 110 lbs Akita agrees. 172 / 242 Andrea of River North: We rescued Nugget 2 years ago from the Chicago English Bulldog Rescue. She had a tough first 5 years of her life, living with an animal hoarder in a crate, she was rescued with her 9 brothers and sisters by CEBR in 2010! Nugget is now living the good life and makes us laugh daily! Anyone who meets her loves her instantly! 173 / 242 Beth Greenhaw of Gold Coast: Ody is a ray of sunshine brightening up anyone's dark days. He is just he sweetest happiest dog and greets each person he meets as if he has missed them. He's gentle with children and rambunctious with adults and his smile can make anyone laugh. Ody is the best dog because of his big inviting smile. 174 / 242 Nicholas Norman of Park Ridge: How Olive, the beagle, became apart of our family. Olive was spotted on an AKC small beagle certified webpage called The Beagle Barn. Her listed name was Trudy. Trudy was my wife's grandma nickname, short for Gertrude. Gertude, the grandma, passed away a few years back. God rest her soul. So it was a sign from above that this beagle should be ours. Grandma, ever since we can remember, had a martini everyday at 5pm until the day she passed. That martini always had an olive in it, the green kind. Thus Olive Gertrude, the beagle, was picked up by us at the Beagle Barn and entered our family as a memory of a martini drinking grandma. So the journey to bring home a new member to our family fits to make Olive the best dog in Chicago. 175 / 242 Julie Woertz of South Loop: Oliver is a 10lb toy poodle who looks like a balloon animal, smiles (literally shows teeth) when I come home from a long day and has been my right hand man when running my successful graphic + web design business in Chicago, We Cre8 Design (formerly Duotone Design). He is known as the "intern" to all of my clients and brings them a bone when they come to visit as a welcome gift. Please pick my sweet Oliver! 176 / 242 Ken Rathke of Andersonville: Ollie is a new Frug (French bulldog/ Pug mix) puppy from Missouri and moved to Chicago at 8wks old He is quickly learning to navigate the streets, parks, beaches and neighbor hoods of this wonderful city. He likes to go out on long walks and when in the mood will wear his signature bow tie. He is getting used to the iphone and camera attention when he is in public, but prefers to spend a peaceful evening at home with close friends chasing his balls; tennis ones, that is. Ollie is taking reading lessons, so that in the event he is the winner of this award, he will be able to read about it, first paw and not put his faith in any lying next door neighbor's cat for telling him otherwise. Good luck to all the entries! 177 / 242 Mary of West Loop: When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, Orso was one of (and still is!) my biggest supporters. He has seen me at my worst and at my best and loves me all the same. I even carried a small, pocket-sized ceramic dog that looks like him with me to all of my treatments and surgeries. He was comforting and supportive even when he wasn't physically with me. He is truly the most loyal dog. 178 / 242 Sarah Munley of Bridgeport: I adopted Oscar with a lot of quirks - he won't walk on wood floors, won't eat food out of a bowl and won't bark at anything for any reason, just to name a few. But Oscar has been the best roommate I've ever had. No living thing makes me laugh harder or appreciate the fleeting nature of some friendships. He won't be around forever and just thinking about that makes me a little teary-eyed, but nothing gives off more love than a good dog. Oscar is just that, plain and simple - he's a good dog.(Disclaimer - I don't keep him in a carseat.) 179 / 242 Kat Rojina of Lakeview: Oscar is the definition of spunky. He's a Cairn Terrier (like Toto) but in his mind he's the size of Great Dane and will always chase the biggest dog on the beach. He LOVES to swim, roll in the snow and his fast little terrier legs can really move. We play fetch or hide & seek after dinner, and he's a great snuggler. Favorite foods: banana, chicken and raspberries. He was shelter dog, and I can't believe just how much happiness this little guy brings to my life. 180 / 242 R. Starkovich of Glendale Heights: Our dog is an unusual brown bundle of wrinkles, part pug & part shar-pei. He's a cuddle bug who helps keep me company. He will curl up on my lap while I watch the White Sox and lays on my husband while he watches the Cubs. He does go upstairs when the Yankees are on though! 181 / 242 Janet Stoddard of Jefferson Park: I got Otis, when I was on the verge of losing my job. I figured I’d have some time to implement critical early training with an 8 wk. old dachshund puppy. As it turns out, I continued working from home for another 18 mos., and now job search mode for the past 8, so I’ve had plenty of quality time, and it’s paid off. He’s been my officemate, companion, and salvation for 2 years now. Otis has pulled my family, friends, acquaintances and strangers into his circle of joy. When mom broke her ankle this winter, he visited her in the rehab center, bringing smiles and relief to all the patients. He aced his first Weiner Dog Race, being cheered on by my entire family sporting “Team Otis” teeshirts. He has quite a fan base on Facebook via “Our Daily Otis” postings…. and, uncharacteristic to the breed, loves to swim. 182 / 242 Brit McSheffery of Loop: Penny Dog is the best! When I rescued her, she had been thrown in a Kentucky dumpster after delivering two sets of puppies before the age of 2! The moment I laid eyes on her and her Wookiee (Havanese) goodness I knew I would give her the childhood she never had (yes I know I am talking about a dog!) Penny rides in her bike basket with me around the city, brings smiles to morning commuters faces, shops with me at Macy's, wrangles with the mutts at the West Loop dog park and is the best cuddler. She loves me unconditionally - I can see it in her little eye balls! Whoever could throw her in a dumpster... I thank them because Penny Dog is all mine! 183 / 242 Susan Butera of South Barrington: Peyton is a Westie. He's named after the one of the best QBs in the NFL...Peyton Manning. He's friendly, cuddly, athletic and cute as a button. He's not perfect..he's got one floppy ear but I think that just adds to his cuteness! It all shows in this adorable picture of him. He jumped into one of the planters in front of my house before I had a chance to plant my hydrangeas. I happen to think he looks better in the pot than the hydrangea! Please pick him!! He's the bestie Westie EVER! 184 / 242 Lauren Gray of Wrigleyville: 6 dogs 4 breeds 1 location All getting along ... PRICELESS! 185 / 242 Renee of East Lakeview: Piper is the sweetest little thing, she prances around like she is the star of a parade! One of the best things about Piper is that she LOVES to have her picture taken and she actually smiles! 186 / 242 Emily Martin & Christian Pelipada of Bucktown: Pippen is the ultimate Chicago dog. We rescued him 3 years ago and named him after a Chicago legend, he sports his jersey all over the city. He loves everything Chicago has to offer, great parks, the beach, dog friendly patios. He's fun, smart and super sweet. We couldn't have asked for a better dog, we're so lucky we found him! 187 / 242 Janet Reece of Gold Coast: I moved to Chicago from Southern California in May. It has been an adjustment. Elevators - yikes; I learned they provide the most practical way to get outside and explore the city. Horses - oh my; I have overcome a suspicious nature toward these equines. High Rises - shocking; I do appreciate the birds' eye views. Chicago is the best! I love the sniffs, birds, bustle and squirrels. I love the parks, art, flowers and fountains. I love both my two legged and four legged neighbors. I honor the respect that I receive by being a good neighbor. Lots of exercise, friendly greetings and responsibly taking care of my business are absolute necessities. I demonstrate joy for my new home by leaping to great heights and enthusiastically applauding Chicago! This brings smiles to all faces! My mission in life is to spread the word; Chicago is the best city in America! 188 / 242 Jayne Fair of Matteson IL: PoohBear Cares, PoohBear is at my side when I drive, during my prayers, I wake up hes there! he protects my Family during our fears! 189 / 242 Sarah Myerscough-Mueller of Lincoln Park: Pudge is Chicago's Top Dog for a host of reasons. He's the happiest, friendliest, cutest pup you'll find - he never passes a person or dog he doesn't want to play with and drool on. You can find him wiggling down Halsted eager to get your attention. Most importantly, though, he's named after White Sox icon Carlton Fisk and, like any good Sox fan, never misses a chance to leave his mark on all ivy he sees.Sarah Myerscough-Mueller of Lincoln Park: Pudge is Chicago's Top Dog for a host of reasons. 190 / 242 Melissa Stoneburner of Wheaton: Quantum Leap (Q), my Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, is the very best dog since he had some large paws to fill. While moving to Chicago my Beagle stayed in Michigan. Before I could get back to get him, he was shot and killed. I was devastated and could not fathom losing another dog so did not look. In the meantime I got married, had children and settled in Wheaton. Finally I wanted a new dog; free of allergens, would have to be easily trained and be my love. Q has completely changed my life and my career goals. He has been there with me through a rare heart condition – never leaving my side. Due to his love I have jumped headlong into Freelance Writing about dogs both locally and nationally. I have also immersed myself and my children in dog rescue and promote dog therapy. Q has been my saving grace! 191 / 242 Alexa Schlosser of Edgewater: Pitbulls get a lot of flak. Just try getting an apartment with one. When Raisin walks down the street, parents pull their children close. She’s not scary looking, but she is a pitbull mix. To some, her boxy head and big smile signify danger. To those who meet her, though, Raisin is a gem. She’s delightfully mild-mannered, gets along with people and other dogs, and absolutely loves to swim in Lake Michigan. She’s moved four times in two years — from Baltimore to Grand Rapids to Lakeview to Edgewater — but all that relocating hasn’t dampened her spirit in the slightest. She loves living in Chicago, and if she could, she’d try to make friends with everyone else who lives here, too. Raisin is Chicago’s top dog because every day she walks around the city reversing the negative stereotype of her breed with her friendly demeanor. 192 / 242 Anne Eckenwiler of Ukranian Village: Not only is Ralphie a crowd pleaser at every summer festival, stopping along the way to meet everyone and pose for photos (his favorite being Retro on Roscoe), but he proudly wears his various jerseys to support local sports (the Bears, Blackhawks and Sox) like a true Chicago fan would. In addition, he's quite the wonder bulldog, he loves swimming in the lakes at Humboldt Park, playing ball at the dog parks and strolling the town with his favorite furry friends. In the summer you’re sure to spot him on patios throughout the city enjoying the view and in the fall/winter you’ll see him tailgating and rooting on his favorite sport, football. He's such a character and truly embraces the charisma and personality of our wonderful city! 193 / 242 Kelly Davies of Rogers Park: Our pug Remington is so adaptable to any person/situation. He truly is the essence of a "city dog"! He loves going for walks around the city, meeting new "friends" at dog parks throughout Chicago, and running through the sand at the doggie beach! He's so loving & easygoing. We can take him anywhere & he has a great time! He's also very good to his little sister pug (1.5 year old Ladybug). 194 / 242 Jordan Koenig of River West: The easiest way to describe Riley is that he loves to love! His Dad even ordered a custom pillow saying Riley loves to love! He has so much personality it's hilarious. If you are working on the computer he will crawl under your arm or paw at the keyboard to get you to stop working and play with him. Then he will just love you, cuddle with you and give you the best feeling no matter if you just had the worst day. He is everybody’s favorite dog, including Chicago! 195 / 242 Steve Collins of Edgewater: Rocco has the personality of a baby boy that likes to chase squirrels. He will do anything for chicken including dress up for xmas. 196 / 242 Tracey Gold of Wicker Park: Rocky is a wonderful little rat terrier who I rescued from Chicago Animal Care and Control about 5 years ago. He is essentially the mascot for my company, Chicago Canine Concierge and is also a Safe Humane Chicago Ambassador. He joins me at all the pet events we host and has even been on WCIU and will be on WGN this week too! This photo was taken by our good friend Jennifer Whaley of Fetch Portraits and truly shows Rocky representing the Chi :) 197 / 242 Kathryn Dunlap of Plainfield: Rufio is the hardest working dog in Chicagoland...his job, making people smile!! He has his own greeting card business and he is in full costume on each card. Even on your worst day, just seeing a picture of this amazing dog will brighten your day. Rufio gives back too..he gives part of his proceeds to NeoRescue and donates most of his winnings from contests to dogs in need. He is what every person should be...loving, compassionate, loyal and a true friend. I am honored that he is in my life. I love you Rufio. 198 / 242 Joseph Giannini of West Loop: Sally is Chicago! Fashion forward, friendly, a foodie and always out for a good time! Sally is a Chihuahua. 199 / 242 Cynthia Brown of Kenilworth: My husband and I adopted Sam when he needed back surgery. He had completely lost the use of his back legs and was hours away from being put down. He's as soft as a mink coat and great to sleep with. But what makes him the best is in his new life, he does pet therapy at a nursing home. Every Wednesday we visit so Sam can do his magic bringing joy to people who have little to be joyful about. He wraps up each visit with a lick on the nose. Believe me, Sam creates a bigger buzz when he arrives at the nursing home than Derrick Rose would at the Paris Club. When I put on my pink volunteer smock, Sam LEAPS out of his bed and runs to the garage. He knows he is going with me to see all his friends at the nursing home. 200 / 242 Kat Lewis of Logan Square: After having been rescued from a terrible living situation and being literal minutes from the gas chamber at the shelter because she was "unadoptable," Sammy has been my best friend... the best listener, food-taster, pillow, squirrel-stalker, snuggle buddy (she will put her paw on my hand when I'm crying or upset), and sqeaky-toy surgeon for the last 7 1/2 years. She makes my life complete. 201 / 242 Lindsey of East Lakeview: Sam has the most personality of any dog I've ever had or met. Constantly wagging his tail, most people think he’s still a pup but he’s not- just that happy and energetic! Around the neighborhood Sam greets everyone he meets- he may be a dog, but humans are his favorite. A true Labrador, he wiggles hit butt when you scratch him out of pure excitement. Not only does he have a vibrant personality, he’s smart too- he can shake, high-five and can fetch all his toys by name. He loves long walks along the lakefront, roaming Lincoln Park and splashing in Belmont Harbor. He spends his days watching over the city and street through his floor to ceiling windows and at FitDog doggy daycare. He always makes me proud to be his Mom. Let's be honest, it's his world and I'm just living in it! 202 / 242 Kerry Heckman of Ravenswood Manor: Scooter is the best dog in Chicago. He’s never won best in show or saved anyone from a burning building, but he brings joy to people’s’ lives everyday. Scooter is famous in Ravenswood Manor for being the cutest dog in the neighborhood. People call out his name from a block away just for the chance to get some Scooter kisses. The best thing about Scooter is that he never discriminates. He gets excited to see anyone who's willing to give him attention. What better dog to represent Chicago? Maybe we could all learn a lesson from this this Jack Russell terrier mix...to be kind to everyone we meet. We all know Chicago could use a little more of that. 203 / 242 Karen of Chicago, Rogers Park: Unfortunately for Scout, a Pit Bull Terrier mix, his start in life was not ordinary. Instead, his was one of brutal violence taken at the hands of his owner. Fortunately, he was rescued by Chicago Police and transported to Chicago Animal Care and Control where he was placed in Safe Humane Chicago’s Court Case Dog Program. Here, dog trainers and volunteers worked to rehabilitate him. His ability to forgive and trust humans warmed the hearts of all who met him. As a result, he quickly found a foster home and forever home. While in foster care, he began working with SHC’s Lifetime Bonds Program. In this program, Scout works with incarcerated youth in a Chicago detention center. Scout helps the boys learn how to bond, socialize and train dogs. Together, they are working towards his Canine Good Citizen certificate. Whether Scout passes or not, we believe he already has. 204 / 242 Alma Tello of Lincoln Square: Scrappy Noodle is a good citizen and an iconic Yorkie. A well refined gentleman, he has a talent for finding hidden treats under the couch and playing amicably with kids. His loyalty is unmatched, his cleverness is unparalleled and he has a serious talent for whittling down bully sticks as big as his 12 pound body. S. Noodle Tello is deeply honored to be a candidate for Chicago's top dog. And one of the cuter dogs you will find. 205 / 242 Holly Ford of Lake Shore East: Sergeant is the most loyal loving dog I've ever had. He intimidates people at first look, but quickly erases the German Shepherd stereotype, and is a huge teddy bear. He insists on giving everyone a big fat kiss when they walk in the door, then proceeds to sit on their lap like any good 75 pound lap dog. He is my running partner, my protector, and my best friend. My boyfriend often complains I love Sergeant more than him, which is a question I, of course, never answer; I don't want to hurt my boyfriend's feelings. Sergeant is the best dog in Chicago, and anyone who meets him would be hard pressed to disagree. 206 / 242 Meredith of Lincoln Park: Sergeant Pepper is a bright, lively, beautiful dog with enough silliness and sweetness to make everyone he meets happy. His gorgeous looks and fun personality compels people young and old to stop, stare, and come say “Hi!” Once a stray on the streets, he was adopted from PAWS Chicago in 2012. He brings joy to his family and sister dog (Penny Lane, a 6 year old cocker spaniel), his friends in the Lincoln Park and Lakeview neighborhoods, and everyone in mom Meredith's dog-friendly office downtown. He knows all the best dog-friendly shops and patios and loves hanging out at dog parks from Wiggly Field to the Montrose Dog Beach. What more can you ask for from a Chicago dog? 207 / 242 Maureen Pestine of Chicago: A breeder in Michigan imported Shalimahr from Italy as a small puppy. She was so beautiful, he breeder began to enter her in the Dogue de Bordeaux competition shows, where she won ribbon after ribbon and achievieved BEST IN SHOW. . At the age of 5, Shalimahr was retired and she came to live with us in Chicago. She is the sweetest dog I could ever imagine. Her breeding years were over and show ring days behind her. Shalimahr is the sweetest dog that can be imagined. She is so loyal and protective, yet gentle and loving. We feel her golden years living in Chicago have offered us and her an enriched lifestyle. She is a very indulged dog and gives so much love back in return. 208 / 242 Lisa of Deerfield: Besides the whole cuteness factor. Sidney has a personality to match! Named after Sidney Crosby, Sidney loves to serve as the family watch dog and play in sprinklers in his down time. He is a happy portuguese water dog that will put a smile on anyone's face. 209 / 242 Dorn Cheske & brother Brian Cheske of LaGrange Park: Silly SALLI is the Best Dog Ever because she is Everybody's Best Friend! Salli is such a Spirited & Charming Beagle and makes everyone smile and laugh with all her antics & tricks to show-off for doggie treats.Today Salli was working with me at the Farmers Market and got into the Blueberry Pie!Cutie PIE Salli had a Good time gobbling up the PIE quickly and swiftly. Salli is very respectable to older people and sickly doggies too. But, will always be Fearless to defend her Honor to Bullies. Salli also knows how to dance & prance to get out and becomes very animated & very excited for treats. Salli is also quite the Swimming beagle to keep her slim beagle figure. Salli is a Rescue doggie from Animal Care League in Oak Park. But, guess what? Salli rescued all of us from everyday humdrum life.Salli is total Love, Joy & Fun.For that we are all Blessed! 210 / 242 Mark Balakoohi of River West: We got Sookie 8 months ago and it has transformed my wife and I's life. She is the sweetest dog - she hasn't made any messes at home and she loves everyone. Sookie is our little baby and has completed our family so much so that we don't even want to have kids anymore. 211 / 242 Megan McCann of East Village: Sophie is the most loving and friendly dog I've ever encountered. I adopted her 3 years ago from a shelter, where she ended up after being found as a stray. She wants to be best friends with every person and animal she meets. My neighbors don't know my name, but they all know Sophie's name. Our walks take forever because everyone we pass wants to stop and pet Sophie. One woman said she should have her own children's book because she looks like she's heading out on an adventure. Sophie is always up for playing with her dozens of stuffed toys, running with the big dogs at the dog beach, or snoring the day away on the couch. 212 / 242 Jane Doyle of Hawthorn Woods: Stella is top dog because every person that looks at her ends up with a big smile on their face. She spreads joy wherever she goes! And....she is a rescue which makes her even more special! 213 / 242 Kate Demet of Lincoln Park: Stella is unabashedly expressive. Whether she's delighted (as in this photo), disappointed, frightened, content, or curious, it's written all over her face. Even without words, she is an exceptional communicator. And with her gentle and personable nature, she spreads joy to everyone she meets during our walks (though she has soft spots for children and the homeless). As if that's not enough, she's also very adaptable - she gracefully transitioned from roaming Colorado's mountains and open space to navigating Chicago's congestion and commotion. Stella perfectly balances having an old soul and a young heart. 214 / 242 Tzivia Masliansky of River North: Stewie is so cute, whenever I walk him people stop and smile. And then they laugh at his wiggle and ask to pet him. He has the personality of a little kid and when he gets excited for something, his whole body wriggles. He can get me to do anything with one look from his big brown eyes. He always knows how to cheer me up and is just a joy to have around. 215 / 242 Mollie Green of Rogers Park: Stickers was rescued by PAWS Chicago from death row in a shelter in Kentucky, and I adopted her from PAWS four years ago. Stickers loves children, walks to the park, dips in Lake Michigan, belly rubs and braided rawhide chews. She has a cute sibling love-hate relationship with my cat, Lemur. Everyday, she sports one of her many bandanas. When I adopted Stickers, I just loved her as a great dog. Then my eyes were opened to the variety of responses people give to an approaching Pit Bull. As a white dog, she wears a bandana well. But more importantly, I felt the bandana made her look more approachable---she is very friendly and lovable. We recently joined a pack walking group, The Chicago SociaBulls (http://www.chicagosociabulls.com/). it is such a wonderful group of people and dogs--a Pit Bull parade every weekend. And I love seeing the joggers and cyclists we pass giggle and smile at our gang. Stickers is the best!!! 216 / 242 Mark of Lincoln Park: He loves people and charms their pants off on a daily basis. 217 / 242 Ashley Gonias of Naperville: Tasha loves everyone she meets. She is quirky, sassy and loves stealing the spotlight away from her animal siblings. Not to mention she's the cutest and most loveable dog in the world! 218 / 242 Dirk Glass of Winfield, IL: Teddy is truly man and woman's best friend. He is very gentle with everyone; kids especially. I think he is a showdog even though he has imperfections. It took 3 years & now Teddy walks with me unleashed. I can leave the house 10 minutes or 10 hours and upon return, he greats me with the same enthusiasm. He only needs 3 things-to eat, a bathroom break & be pet/loved. I do need to get his teeth cleaned though, but worry about the anesthesia, so your suggestions would be appreciated. Everyone loves him and teddy would represent Chicago well. 219 / 242 Owner: Brett Gensler Email: brett.gensler@gmail.com City: Loop Dog's age: 5 months Brett Gensler of Loop: Theo the beagle is the sweetest boy. He and his friend Chunky, the Siamese cat, play for hours each day in between naps. He is house trained and sweet and oinly chews the plaster off the walls once or twice a month. 220 / 242 Amanda of West Loop: Tipsy is named for the white tip on her tail, and my love for a good dirty martini. Tips would never be described as “well behaved,” as her natural curiosity often gets her in trouble. Thou she is the happiest dog in the world! She loves all things Chicago, if it’s a trip to the dog park, an outdoor bar, or watching the Water Taxi go by, you can always see her tail wagging as she’s walking around downtown. 221 / 242 Kasia McCormick of Lincoln Park: Tito is a big boy in a small dog's body: he swims, he surfs, he plays soccer, and he never wants to be left out. The more you play the more he wants to be in the mix of things. Whether its chasing your ping pongs, retrieving your football or diving for a frisbee in the lake--he always is on your team. 222 / 242 Ann Daugherty of Northlake: My file folder with all my images of my dog, Trouble, is labeled "The Best Dog", however, it has nothing to do with all his talents, because he doesn't actually do anything. He doesn't play fetch, catch frisbees, do tricks, and only makes half-hearted attempts to chase squirrels and rabbits. He just is. He's a big loyal fluff of love that is always trying to "connect". He likes nothing more than to lean his head against your leg and look up at you. When he wants to be petted, he'll very gently snuffle his snout under your hand, and lift your hand up with his head. So far, no one is immune to his charms and everyone falls in love with him, even the proclaimed dog-haters. My son's friend put it succinctly..."Your dog can see into my soul!" 223 / 242 Bridget Levy of Streeterville: Tug is the best dog because although he can be super laid back and easy going, he also has a sassy side (hence the name "Tug", as he "tugs" us along on walks) He definitely walks with a little swagger because everyone in the neighborhood knows and loves him (every morning he visits certain stores where he knows the owner will give him a treat or pet him). He is the friendliest dog and because he doesn't have a tail to wag, he wiggles his whole body when he gets excited, which is often :) And when he gets tired, he loses control of his tongue and it hangs out the side of his mouth, which is adorable. He truly is the best dog in Chicago! 224 / 242 Carleen Coulter of Shorewood: Ty excels at being a little dog with no tail. With the help of a secretary, he runs his own website at Puppyonaroomba.com and has a popular Facebook page with the same name. He spends his time farming earthworms, testing toys, and practicing athletic feats of agility. 225 / 242 Lindsey Richardson of Edgewater: There is no other dog on the planet who loves her people more than Vada. She was named after the adorably neurotic main character from the movie MY GIRL, and the name really suits her. We rescued her from PAWS in December, and she quickly became the light of my life. The fact that she was surrendered by her previous owners is heartbreaking, but she has brought my partner and I more laughter, joy, and love than I could have imagined. Though we have no idea what breed she is, she has little blonde "angel wing" markings on her back that have me convinced Vada was sent to us from Heaven. Her lanky gait, gentle nature, and dinosaur-like yawns are just a few things that make her the best dog ever! 226 / 242 Erica Schisler of West Town: Vito is a 3 year old Italian Greyhound rescue from Missouri who came to live in Chicago in September 2010. Over the past 1 ½ years Vito has accomplished a lot. Halloween 2010 Vito won 1st place in Petco’s (River North) costume contest and Halloween 2011 he won 1st in Parker's (Hyde Park) costume contest. Then in March 2012 Vito won 1st place in the month long WCIU Dog Fashion Show. Most recently Vito’s photograph was chosen as a cover finalist and featured in the May 2012 issue of TAILS Magazine. Vito didn’t let all that fame go to his head though! What really makes Vito “Chicago’s Top Dog” is that he has welcomed into his home 10 ALIVE Rescue foster dogs and cats that were saved from local animal shelters. Vito’s biggest accomplishment is being able to calm, comfort, and play with the fosters until they find forever homes! 227 / 242 Erica of West Town: Vito Erica of West Town: Vito is a 3 year old Italian Greyhound rescue and has already accomplished a lot. Halloween 2010 Vito won 1st place in a local costume contest and Halloween 2011 he won 1st in another local costume contest. Then in March 2012 Vito won 1st place in a month long Dog Fashion Show which was broadcast on a local Chicago Station. Vito’s biggest accomplishment is being able to calm, comfort, and play with the fosters until they find forever homes! 228 / 242 Derek & Amy Gale of Wicker Park: Wallace Barksdale is Chicago's top dog for the following five reasons: 5. She's named after not one, but two characters on "The Wire." 4. Her unique hair is soft & stylish, and has a great natural color (she uses no products). 3. When she's excited to see you, her entire butt wiggles uncontrollably. 2. She's equally fond of people and other dogs, while most pups prefer one or the other. 1. She's universally known and loved. Take a walk around Wicker Park with her and you'll hear calls of, "Is that Wallace? Wallace!" Take her to River North, where she spent her first three weeks in Chicago, and you won't be able to walk half a block without her being mobbed. You'll finally understand what it's like to be part of a celebrity's entourage. 229 / 242 Caycee Johnson of West Town: Walter is the ultimate Chicago dog. Not only is he named after one of the greatest Chicago Bear's of all time but he loves going on walks around the city and especially checking out his hood! He loves all other dogs and people. He goes every where with his Mom including the hair and nail salon but he's still a tough little guy! Walter is the ultimate Chicago dog because he is a lover and loves living in Chicago! 230 / 242 Katie Badeusz of River West: This French Bulldog is a true city dweller. While he mostly relaxes, chews his bone and sleeps soundly under a blanket during the day in his River West condo, Weezy takes on the streets of Chicago in the evenings and on the weekends. Some of his favorite activities include exploring other neighborhood dog parks to meet fellow four-legged friends, showing off his cuteness while dining alfresco during the summer, eating his favorite snacks, Cheerios and popcorn, and checking out all of the new dog-friendly hot spots around the city. You can occasionally catch him at Montrose Beach when it’s not too hot out or visiting other dogs around his neighborhood on his daily walk. He also loves showing off on social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook. Weezy is a one-of-a-kind Frenchie with his small build, cuddly and outgoing personality and passion for all things Chicago. 231 / 242 Lauren Lynch of Lincoln Square: Whatcom is the newly adopted addition to our family! After living in Seattle for five years, my fiancé and I were eager to adopt a dog when we returned to our hometown (Chicago). Named after our favorite place, Whatcom Falls in Bellingham, WA., she's the best dog we could have hoped for! Whatcom is one talented canine: she loves to swim and has a knack for making everyone laugh. Three times a week, she visits my fiancé's work, a retirement home outside of Chicago, and attends Bingo, socials and even the daily employee meeting. She's incredibly polite and we plan to get her certified to visit hospitals and other retirement communities! Whatcom is extremely social and her favorite toy is a tennis ball (which happens to be on the bottom of the walkers at the retirement home)... 232 / 242 Ian Bucciarelli of Logan Square: Whisky is my angel from heaven. At least that’s what I tell him and he tilts his head and wags his tail when he hears it. Whisky came to use via Chicago’s Animal Care and Control on Western Avenue in ‘03. He is the most gentle, thoughtful, and well-behaved dog we have owned and we have had some “complicated” dogs in the past. Although he lost a sister recently at the young age of two to cancer, he is currently helping to acclimate a new addition to the family who is working through some typical shelter dogs issues. While experiencing diversity, homelessness, and loss, he always manages to remains a bowl is always half-empty type of pooch and loves a ride in the car or a tummy rub. 233 / 242 Patti Blair of Lakeview: Whisper is not only gorgeous, well behaved, loyal and intelligent but she is also my best friend. 234 / 242 Andrea Varias of Oak Park: The day I met Willameena May, or Willy, she sat in my lap and looked up at me with concern in her eyes and a tongue poking out from crooked teeth. I was simply not equipped for the amount of cute in this pug. She keeps me and my girlfriend laughing, even when we're bleary-eyed in the middle of the night. She flashes her sad eyes at us if we try to sneak out of bed in the morning when she’s spooning our heads. She will instantly love you, especially if you have a bottomless pocket of treats or baby carrots. Her dislikes include baths and being told not to sit on the laps of strangers. Willy loves to collapse in the grass in order to be dragged along for a quick back-scratch. I do not think you can measure the amount of charm in this delightful fur baby. 235 / 242 Lisa Goldberg Najman of Wicker Park: Winnie's cuteness brings the biggest of men to their knees; and her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. This sweet goofball loves everyone she crosses paths with and revels in the attention she receives. Adopted as a "flawed" dog, due to her mixed-breed (Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi), Winnie continuously melts hearts with her big smile and endearing personality. This girl loves hopping in the snow, eating apples, and getting a good ol' belly rub. 236 / 242 Todd of Roscoe Village: Wooly is an amazing dog. We met him on a random volunteer dog walk for Chicago Canine Rescue and fell in love. As soon as we moved to an apartment that allowed dogs we adopted him and he's brought us so much love. He's a mini poodle mutt. He loves to play with his toys, chase squirrels and jump in sprinklers and the snow depending on the season. In this picture Wooly is smiling (like he always does) because he just helped me propose to my girlfriend (she said yes!). 237 / 242 Jodi of Noble Square: Wrigley was named for my love of Chicago (and the Cubs). I grew up in Pennsylvania, but always knew that this would be my home one day. My guy may only be 20lbs, but he has major charisma, and makes friends with any person or animal he meets. We recently lost his "sister," a fawn pug named Minnie. Wrigley has done well through it, helping me feel better most of all. He's the best alarm clock, wingman, therapist and best friend a gal could ever want! 238 / 242 Jessica Six of Wicker Park: He loves everyone, is super cute and soft, and is just a happy go lucky kinda dog. 239 / 242 Kathi Lindstrom of Lincoln Park: A true 'man about town' Zeke can often be spotted throughout the city. Whether shopping on Michigan Ave, attending Movies in the Park, racing in Bark in the Park or having a drink at one of the dog friendly bars, Zeke is always the life of the party. Currently training with the Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy Program, Zeke will soon be able to add therapist to his list of conquests. This gentle giant is hard to miss and easy to love. If named the winner he will make Chicago proud and stand up to the Best Dog of Chicago title! Thanks for voting Zeke as Best Dog!! 240 / 242 Molly of chicago: Zelda is my new best friend and she follows me everywhere I go. Zelda has a great way of making people smile as she walks past them. At the dog park, she leaps onto the dog owner's laps to show her affection. She especially likes walking by our neighborhood nursing home to say hello to the everyone, bringing smiles to their faces. 241 / 242 Yevgenia Kramnik of West Loop: I am the quintessential Chicago Alpha female who won't take no for an answer when demanding a treat. I love to frolic at Montrose dog beach in Chicago summers, play “catch-the-snowball” in Chicago winters, and give the neighborhood squirrels chase. You can bet I’ll let you know that I’m the HBIC (head b!*%h in charge) when you see me and comment on how handsome I am. I’m a lady, silly human! I can always count on a nice pat on the head from the CPD officers standing outside my local police station, a hug from a too-drunk bar patron who “had a dog just like me” when he was little, or a gentle pet from a well-behaved Chicago toddler. Because let’s face it, who doesn’t love a beautiful German Shepherd? 242 / 242 Melissa Quintas of River West: Zoey is certainly the best dog in Chicago. I got her just before I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She has been by my side to lick my face and snuggle with me when I felt so sick from the Chemo they were giving me. She motivated me to get up and take her for walks around the neighborhood. Her unconditional love made me feel not so alone during a very hard time in my life. Best of Chicago 2012: Best Dogs Contest July 10, 2012, 1:35 pm Here are some of the great reader submissions to Chicago magazine’s 2012 Best Dog in Chicago Contest. Look for the winner in the October issue of Chicago.
