Arnold is a rescued Pitbull. He was so sick due to many food allergies that it took us about 6 months to get him on the right diet. During his early years, on top of being sick, he had very poor training, and bad separation anxiety. Now, he is currently enrolled in CGC training, and working his way to become a Therapy Dog. His calm personality and lovable demeanor makes him the perfect dog for the job. He has overcome many obstacles, poor early training, sickness, fighting BSL's in and around our town. He is the perfect example of a Pitbull, and by far the best dog. He is happiest when he is playing with kids or snuggling with people. Arnold was even featured in the Dailey Herald for an article on staying cool in the summer heat. Arnold is the best dog!

AZ is the perfect lap dog, the perfect city dog. When we go to the dog park, she does not care about the other dogs. She goes straight for the humans. All she wants to do is cuddle with others. She makes any passerby smile and pet her. She also spends most of the day resting so she can have the energy to run around outside.

Baby Jane is a fierce 7lb ball of crazy. We adopted her from a pug rescue two years ago. She is not all pug but she is all awesome. She barks too much, runs too much and defends her toys fiercely from her brother Zeke, a 3 yr old, 60 lb boxer who fears her. Her prozac doesn't really work but we give it to her daily anyway. Besides being quite the little people pleaser in the neighborhood (and at home for that matter). He is enrolling this October to obtain his animal assisted therapy certificate to help spread his loving nature to those in need. Although very mild mannered he loves to explore the great outdoors on the weekend, going for hikes, to the beach and canoeing! Chicago brought us together and together we'll continue to enjoy every possible aspect of this beautiful city together. Simply stated, he is the best little love bug ever! Badgley 2012!

Bam Bam is Chicago's Smile Ambassador, pet rescue advocate and dog about town. With his wide grin and prancey walk, he brings joy to everyone he meets, even turning machismo men into mush. Bam Bam is a pint-sized Pom with personality plus, a real socialite and character to boot. He never hesitates to express himself through interpretive dance, body language or dog-speak, and he enjoys nothing more than a good wrestling match with his best pal Smokey the Cat (hilarious!). Bam Bam is a sweet, well-mannered boy who eats his fruits and veggies and puts himself to bed at night. He loves family time and exploring all the sights and smells Chicago has to offer. He's a fixture on the alfresco dining scene and fan favorite throughout his neighborhood. Simply put, Bam Bam is the best dog in Chicago because he spreads happiness wherever he goes.

Hands down Barley is the best dog in Chicago. Even though he is adopted from PAWS, he was born to be a member of the Rassner family. He is the life of any party, always smiling and loves being petted. He's a total city dog. He's already famous to us and can't wait to be featured in Mom and Dad's favorite magazine!

Bandit was adopted as a puppy and instantly became part of the family and the highlight of every day. Bandit’s hobbies include sleeping in extremely uncomfortable positions, rearranging his furniture (pillow bed), sleeping with his bone, destroying each and every toy he has, and improvising peeing stances – including, but not limited to, four legs, three and a half legs, and laying down. But what makes Bandit really special is his sweet personality, his up-for-anything attitude, and his love for the neighborhood kids, who refer to him as the “Cow Dog.”

Bari is the absolute best because he is always smiling, just look at his face! He has the best personality, always playing and pawing to get your attention. Funny/gross side note, he tries to chew used gum when we go on walks! He can find already chewed gum a mile away, which is lovably disgusting!

Barney was found this past December taped up in a cardboard box and thrown into a dumpster. Thankfully, a good samaritan found him and took him to ACC before he froze! When we adopted him this January, he was missing a lot of fur from flea bites, and was very scrawny. He's since grown a beautiful coat of fur, put on some weight, and is the friendliest dog you will EVER meet. We're happy that we gave Barney a well-deserved second chance, and we're even more grateful that he gave people a second chance, too!

Baxter is a rare dark Chinese Crested Hairless. He is our best buddy. He gets tan in the summer, name one other dog on this list that tans. He bites your nose to show affection. Bert is a little Chihuahua with big ears and a giant heart. He was (luckily) rescued from an abusive owner when he was just a few months old, then spent his first couple of years in New Mexico living life to the fullest on a 10,000 acre ranch with my parents. He passed his days riding 4 wheelers, chasing the horses and herding the cattle while keeping the cow dogs at goats in check. Though Bert enjoyed country life, we feared for his safety, due to his pint size, and decided to bring him to Chicago to get a taste of the big city. Well, he was like a fish out of water for several weeks - jumping at every horn honk, speeding bicycle, or laughing child. But before too long, he adapted to life as a city slicker. He learned to walk on a leash and settled for chasing squirrels instead of sheep. Bert is the best dog in Chicago! We love Bert more than we could ever express and are grateful for the honor to share our lives with him.

Hi, My name is Betty & I live & work with my best friend, Moira. Every morning, she & I drive to our job. She is the administrator/nurse in a special place for people who are often very sick & mostly looking for a reminder of their own home. I try to be that reminder. Sometimes, I go with folks to therapy, trotting alongside their wheelchair. What I really like best though, is sitting in a friendly lap. I like to take little walks down the hall & visit with someone who might be too weak to get out of bed. I stay until they feel better. Even though I'm very small, just 6 pounds, my heart is big & at the end of the day, I feel happy to be so loved & needed by the people I comfort.

Blue is a chubby, happy-go-lucky guy who cares less about chasing girl dogs & more about chasing rabbits. Most of the people I don’t even know by name & vice versa, but they know Blue, our disappearing act, & greet him with a belly rub. He even got to know the community police department & took a ride in the back of the cop car after escaping from our yard to explore the local park—head out the window, tongue out & ears flapping in the wind! Blue has taught me that no one is a stranger, & our neighborhood is full of wonderful, amazing people. You just need to follow your nose once in a while!

And despite his mop, Boone doesn't shed a hair....thanks to the hypoallergenic poodle in him. The best dog ever.

After a failed ruptured disk operation last year, Bruiser became paralyzed from the waist down. Through therapy and hard work, Bruiser has regained the ability to wag his tail and to stand, we are not giving up on him and his ability to one day walk again. In the meantime, Bruiser gets around town on his custom wheels. He has never lost his playful attitude and has adapted well to his disability. He loves the attention that the wheels bring to him and is the poster dog to show other dogs and their owners that you still can have a full life even with disabilities. Pick Bruiser as the best dog in Chicago because this is how he rolls!

Bubba is Chicago's best dog because he brings a smile to everyone's face that meets him or sees a picture of him. He has so many fans, many that have never even met him. Oh, but if they did-they would see how silly this Frenchie is and would love him even more! Bubba is a people's person and does not have a mean bone in his body. His heart is bigger than his ears, believe it or not! This frog dog loves to play with ice cubes and his favorite squeaky monkey. His favorite treat is Greek yogurt, loves listening to the oldies station, and loves to meet new pals on long walks. (And, of course, a fan of all Chicago sports!)

Charles Lutz of West Loop:
Buddy is currently on his fifth and final home. He had a rough go of it for a while, as some of his previous owners abused him, and some of them couldn't afford to care for him. But now that he is in a comfortable "forever home", he has really started to shine. He lives to run, and has never met a tennis ball he didn't want to chase. This dog has serious hops, as you can see from his photo. He is just as comfortable playing in the mud as he is laying on the couch and watching TV. To know Buddy is to love Buddy. He likes to welcome his friends over with a "happy dance" every time he sees them. He is truly the Best Dog in Chicago.

Lars Juhl of Ukrainian Village:
Buddy survived a car crash in the mountains of New Mexico back in 2005 that unfortunately took the life of his owner and my best friend Dan Stephenson who was killed instantly that night in January. After being rescued by a truck driver several days later, Buddy was brought back to Chicago and has stayed with us ever since. Now 13 years old, blind and having a hard time moving around, he is still the happiest thing on this earth and a daily reminder to us on how to live life. He truly is Chicago's top dog!

It took me months to see it, and for some time could not understand all the compliments he gets, but not only does he have a great face and smile, but a fun personality! I thought it was "puppy crazies" at first, but this silly french bulldog will still kick it into high gear, put his ears back and turn into a greyhound. He will do laps either around our condo or up and down our outside condo hallway (psst, it's against the rules, but he's determined and French too!). It a great way to get a good laugh each day.

All my life I had been wanting a dog. Since I was 18 I have struggled with depression. My parents used to tell me, it was good I didn't have a dog because I wouldn't be able to take care of one in my state. But two years ago, my depression became very serious. I couldn't pull myself out of it. My parents were at a loss. Instead of thinking a dog would hinder my recovery; they thought it would improve it. I always wanted to rescue a dog. My whole family is allergic to everything. After months of searching and playing with different dogs, we finally found our Chandler. He was 5 1/2 months old when he came home with us. He brought me back to life. My family, who never wanted a dog, is now in love with our 5 pound ball of fire. My parents love taking him for a walk because he prances when he walks and gets insulted when others don't stop to look at him. He is 100% a mommy's boy and I have to say he was worth the 24 years of begging.

Chicklet is the best dog simply because she is mine. On May 23 Chicklet became a permanent part of my life. I had just moved to the city six months prior and was slowly starting to settle into a new routine: new job; new apartment; new life. But something was missing. And it didn't become complete until Chicklet arrived. She eased herself into my life like she'd always belonged. Now I can't imagine myself without her. Chicklet was surrendered to Animal Care and Control, then rescued by a wonderful local organization, One Tail at a Time. Now she is living the dream and can regularly be found prancing around Wicker Park, begging for treats and avoiding the waves at Montrose Dog Beach. When she's not out and about, little Chick is snoozing on the bed, only comfortable when you finally join her. She is a Chicago pup through and through!

Chief is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, or a Toller. The breed is the smallest of the retrievers - he weighs just under 40 pounds. He is a happy family dog - he loves running around with our teenage son, and going to obedience class with our teenage daughter. He is very social and likes to perform tricks. He goes nuts when he sees water, he sings and pants hoping to swim and retrieve a bumper. Again and again. Tollers are awesome dogs.

Chloe is a compassionate companion and, to me, the best dog in Chicago! Life was pretty tough when she lost her previous owner (my mother) and had to transition from being a Colorado lap dog to a Chicago city dog. But nothing stops her—not even a mass-cell tumor, hip dysplasia, or a heart murmur. She always has a happy lick and tail wag for whoever she meets and at nine years old is still as sprightly and enthusiastic as a young pup. Her groomers call her a “special girl” and that she is! My Clare is the best dog because she has brought me many laughs (and outbursts) over the 6 years I have had her. She is the ONLY dog I know that actively watches TV. Yes, actively. When Swifter mop commercials come on, where ever she is, she sprints to the TV, puts her paws on the TV stand, stands up and watches wagging her tail fiercely. When Coco isn’t on-duty as the household’s watch dog at her post (the front window) she keeps busy by strategically hiding her chicken-flavored treats around the house. Coco’s favorite sound is that of her lease jingling, which can only mean her favorite activity is to follow—a walk! Coco enjoys going for short walks around her block, since her short legs don’t allow her to get much further without needing to be carried back into the house. Coco also enjoys the wind running through her fur while she sticks her face out of the car window when she’s on her way to the train station to pick up human-friends.

We just moved to Chicago in May, and Cooper has adjusted beautifully. At first, he was unsure of the sidewalks and the traffic. It only took him a couple walks to figure it out. Also, at least 5 times a day people pet him and say how cute he is. He kind of expects it now.

Fredo Corleone got his name from the weakest and unintelligent Corleone brother from the Godfather movies. We laughed because he was the last Chihuahua left at the pet store. But after a recent pancreatitis diagnosis and a couple days in the animal ER, he is on a strictly bland diet. As you can see from the photo, he isn’t happy about it. Lily started as a foster dog in our home in the cold month of February. Picked up as a stray in southern IL, she came to us with a broken pelvis, fur that was dyed hot pink and blue and a horrible internal infection that left her unable to eat or move for days. The tattoos on the inside of her hind legs lead us to belive that she was either a hunting dog or a puppy mill mother. Despite all her injuries and lack of socialization she fit into our home with our other 2 beagles and she has become one of our family members; we just couldn't adopt Lily to another family! In early March as I walked Lola just one block from my apartment I was hit by a car in the middle of Clark street. Lola was fine (Thank God!) but I dropped the leash on impact and fortunately, a witness grabbed Lola and attempted to pull her out of the street to safety. Lola wouldn't budge. She sat next to me in the middle of the street until the two witnesses help carry me to the side of the street while we waited for the EMT. She stayed next to me refusing to move anywhere without me. She kept this up throughout the recovery sensitive to the fact I couldn't get around as I used to. In addition to her extreme loyalty, there's the obvious- she is ridiculously cute, she is also brave, fun and absolutely quirky. Well versed in all Chicago areas, Lola currently resides in Lincoln Square, but has also lived in Lincoln Park and River North. Lola's an adopted bulldog mix. Key word: adopted. Here's why: Luna has always been very independent. All she needs and wants is good food, a comfy bed and lots of love. But one night, she was about 2-3 years old, she heard me cry. She had heard me cry other times before, but she felt this time was different. And it was. I was about to split with my boyfriend at the time and I was totally heart-broken. Literally heart-broken. So she decided to walk into my bedroom and all she did was place her head on the mattress next to my pillow, and closed her eyes. She didn't "say" or do anything. I cried myself to sleep... When I tell people Moxie is a beagle-lab they hesitate, I assume they’re trying to digest how that would work. She actually looks like a black lab puppy, save for the white patch on her chest you wouldn’t know she’s part beagle until you saw her nose in action. Our neighbor’s claim that Moxie’s howling at all things human/animal scared away a potential intruder that kicked in their backdoor. My Mom says her name is Moxie because "She had a lot of moxie bringing a dog home!" but really it’s from “Moxie Crimefighter” which is the name of Penn Jillette’s daughter (of Penn & Teller). I cut the vigilante part but then again, maybe it fits.

Nellie was always a good dog. Two years ago, Nellie was diagnosis with diabetes, causing her to develop cataracts that has completely blinded her. Nellie continued to try, and after awhile she learned how to avoid the furniture in our house, and she memorized how many steps it would take to get to our back gate. Every year we go to Northern Wisconsin, but we were hesitant to bring her along this year, because there is a lake there and she likes to swim. But Nellie without the slightest amount of fear, marched straight into the water and decided to swim like she had in previous years. Nellie had no idea where she was going, but it never slowed her down. Nellie has always been a good dog, but now she's a great dog.

My husband and I adopted Sam when he needed back surgery. He had completely lost the use of his back legs and was hours away from being put down. He's as soft as a mink coat and great to sleep with. But what makes him the best is in his new life, he does pet therapy at a nursing home. Every Wednesday we visit so Sam can do his magic bringing joy to people who have little to be joyful about. He wraps up each visit with a lick on the nose. Believe me, Sam creates a bigger buzz when he arrives at the nursing home than Derrick Rose would at the Paris Club. When I put on my pink volunteer smock, Sam LEAPS out of his bed and runs to the garage. He knows he is going with me to see all his friends at the nursing home.

Unfortunately for Scout, a Pit Bull Terrier mix, his start in life was not ordinary. Instead, his was one of brutal violence taken at the hands of his owner. Fortunately, he was rescued by Chicago Police and transported to Chicago Animal Care and Control where he was placed in Safe Humane Chicago’s Court Case Dog Program. Here, dog trainers and volunteers worked to rehabilitate him. His ability to forgive and trust humans warmed the hearts of all who met him. As a result, he quickly found a foster home and forever home. While in foster care, he began working with SHC’s Lifetime Bonds Program. In this program, Scout works with incarcerated youth in a Chicago detention center. Scout helps the boys learn how to bond, socialize and train dogs. Together, they are working towards his Canine Good Citizen certificate. Whether Scout passes or not, we believe he already has.

My file folder with all my images of my dog, Trouble, is labeled "The Best Dog", however, it has nothing to do with all his talents, because he doesn't actually do anything. He doesn't play fetch, catch frisbees, do tricks, and only makes half-hearted attempts to chase squirrels and rabbits. He just is. He's a big loyal fluff of love that is always trying to "connect". He likes nothing more than to lean his head against your leg and look up at you. When he wants to be petted, he'll very gently snuffle his snout under your hand, and lift your hand up with his head. So far, no one is immune to his charms and everyone falls in love with him, even the proclaimed dog-haters. My son's friend put it succinctly..."Your dog can see into my soul!"

Tug is the best dog because although he can be super laid back and easy going, he also has a sassy side (hence the name "Tug", as he "tugs" us along on walks) He definitely walks with a little swagger because everyone in the neighborhood knows and loves him (every morning he visits certain stores where he knows the owner will give him a treat or pet him). He is the friendliest dog and because he doesn't have a tail to wag, he wiggles his whole body when he gets excited, which is often :) And when he gets tired, he loses control of his tongue and it hangs out the side of his mouth, which is adorable. He truly is the best dog in Chicago!

Lindsey Richardson of Edgewater:
There is no other dog on the planet who loves her people more than Vada. She was named after the adorably neurotic main character from the movie MY GIRL, and the name really suits her. We rescued her from PAWS in December, and she quickly became the light of my life. The fact that she was surrendered by her previous owners is heartbreaking, but she has brought my partner and I more laughter, joy, and love than I could have imagined. Though we have no idea what breed she is, she has little blonde "angel wing" markings on her back that have me convinced Vada was sent to us from Heaven. Her lanky gait, gentle nature, and dinosaur-like yawns are just a few things that make her the best dog ever!

Halloween 2010 Vito won 1st place in Petco’s (River North) costume contest and Halloween 2011 he won 1st in Parker's (Hyde Park) costume contest. Then in March 2012 Vito won 1st place in the month long WCIU Dog Fashion Show. Most recently Vito’s photograph was chosen as a cover finalist and featured in the May 2012 issue of TAILS Magazine. Vito didn’t let all that fame go to his head though! What really makes Vito “Chicago’s Top Dog” is that he has welcomed into his home 10 ALIVE Rescue foster dogs and cats that were saved from local animal shelters. Vito’s biggest accomplishment is being able to calm, comfort, and play with the fosters until they find forever homes!

Walter is the ultimate Chicago dog because he is a lover and loves living in Chicago!

This French Bulldog is a true city dweller. While he mostly relaxes, chews his bone and sleeps soundly under a blanket during the day in his River West condo, Weezy takes on the streets of Chicago in the evenings and on the weekends. Some of his favorite activities include exploring other neighborhood dog parks to meet fellow four-legged friends, showing off his cuteness while dining alfresco during the summer, eating his favorite snacks, Cheerios and popcorn, and checking out all of the new dog-friendly hot spots around the city. You can occasionally catch him at Montrose Beach when it’s not too hot out or visiting other dogs around his neighborhood on his daily walk. He also loves showing off on social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook. Weezy is a one-of-a-kind Frenchie with his small build, cuddly and outgoing personality and passion for all things Chicago.

Whatcom is the newly adopted addition to our family! After living in Seattle for five years, my fiancé and I were eager to adopt a dog when we returned to our hometown (Chicago). Named after our favorite place, Whatcom Falls in Bellingham, WA., she's the best dog we could have hoped for! Whatcom is one talented canine: she loves to swim and has a knack for making everyone laugh. Three times a week, she visits my fiancé's work, a retirement home outside of Chicago, and attends Bingo, socials and even the daily employee meeting. She's incredibly polite and we plan to get her certified to visit hospitals and other retirement communities! Whatcom is extremely social and her favorite toy is a tennis ball (which happens to be on the bottom of the walkers at the retirement home)...

Whisky is my angel from heaven. At least that’s what I tell him and he tilts his head and wags his tail when he hears it. Whisky came to use via Chicago’s Animal Care and Control on Western Avenue in ‘03. He is the most gentle, thoughtful, and well-behaved dog we have owned and we have had some “complicated” dogs in the past. Although he lost a sister recently at the young age of two to cancer, he is currently helping to acclimate a new addition to the family who is working through some typical shelter dogs issues. While experiencing diversity, homelessness, and loss, he always manages to remains a bowl is always half-empty type of pooch and loves a ride in the car or a tummy rub.

The day I met Willameena May, or Willy, she sat in my lap and looked up at me with concern in her eyes and a tongue poking out from crooked teeth. I was simply not equipped for the amount of cute in this pug. She keeps me and my girlfriend laughing, even when we're bleary-eyed in the middle of the night. She flashes her sad eyes at us if we try to sneak out of bed in the morning when she’s spooning our heads. She will instantly love you, especially if you have a bottomless pocket of treats or baby carrots. Her dislikes include baths and being told not to sit on the laps of strangers. Willy loves to collapse in the grass in order to be dragged along for a quick back-scratch. I do not think you can measure the amount of charm in this delightful fur baby.

Winnie's cuteness brings the biggest of men to their knees; and her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. This sweet goofball loves everyone she crosses paths with and revels in the attention she receives. Adopted as a "flawed" dog, due to her mixed-breed (Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi), Winnie continuously melts hearts with her big smile and endearing personality. This girl loves hopping in the snow, eating apples, and getting a good ol' belly rub.

Wooly is an amazing dog. We met him on a random volunteer dog walk for Chicago Canine Rescue and fell in love. As soon as we moved to an apartment that allowed dogs we adopted him and he's brought us so much love. He's a mini poodle mutt. He loves to play with his toys, chase squirrels and jump in sprinklers and the snow depending on the season. In this picture Wooly is smiling (like he always does) because he just helped me propose to my girlfriend (she said yes!).

Wrigley was named for my love of Chicago (and the Cubs). I grew up in Pennsylvania, but always knew that this would be my home one day. My guy may only be 20lbs, but he has major charisma, and makes friends with any person or animal he meets. We recently lost his "sister," a fawn pug named Minnie. Wrigley has done well through it, helping me feel better most of all. He's the best alarm clock, wingman, therapist and best friend a gal could ever want!

Zelda is my new best friend and she follows me everywhere I go. Zelda has a great way of making people smile as she walks past them. At the dog park, she leaps onto the dog owner's laps to show her affection. She especially likes walking by our neighborhood nursing home to say hello to the everyone, bringing smiles to their faces.

I am the quintessential Chicago Alpha female who won't take no for an answer when demanding a treat. I love to frolic at Montrose dog beach in Chicago summers, play “catch-the-snowball” in Chicago winters, and give the neighborhood squirrels chase. You can bet I’ll let you know that I’m the HBIC (head b!*%h in charge) when you see me and comment on how handsome I am. I’m a lady, silly human! I can always count on a nice pat on the head from the CPD officers standing outside my local police station, a hug from a too-drunk bar patron who “had a dog just like me” when he was little, or a gentle pet from a well-behaved Chicago toddler. Because let’s face it, who doesn’t love a beautiful German Shepherd?

Melissa Quintas of River West:
Zoey is certainly the best dog in Chicago. I got her just before I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She has been by my side to lick my face and snuggle with me when I felt so sick from the Chemo they were giving me. She motivated me to get up and take her for walks around the neighborhood. Her unconditional love made me feel not so alone during a very hard time in my life.
