You won’t unwrap any of the cutesiness often seen in Japanese-style lunch boxes (think Hello Kitty–shaped rice balls) at The Bento Box, Rick Spiros’s 12-seat BYO and takeout place. “I’m not as focused on aesthetics,” says Spiros, who packs items like barbecue beef bulgogi, Berkshire pork fried rice, and in-house mortar-and-pestle curries, including a lemongrass variety topped with free-range Jidori chicken, into his made-to-order boxes. When mains and sides—like kimchi, jasmine rice, and choy sum—are tucked into each container’s five dainty sections, the overall effect has to be at least a little kawaii. 2246 W.
