By the American Medical Association’s count, there are about 35,000 doctors in metropolitan Chicago. With so many to choose from, where should you turn in a health crisis?

Our Top Doctors list is a great place to start. This year’s group is bigger than ever: It includes nearly 500 MDs in the city and suburbs and encompasses 60 commonly consulted specialties. To pinpoint the best of the best, the research firm Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. went straight to the people in the ideal position to judge medical excellence: doctors themselves. (For details of its methodology, click here)

Keep in mind that this is an elite group: Fewer than 2 percent of local MDs snagged a spot on our list. You can read about some of them in our doctor profiles. Some have become so popular that you may find they are no longer taking new patients. If that’s the case, ask for a referral to a trusted colleague.
