After 40 years in business, C & C VACUUM (Westmont) can repair almost any make and model of vacuum cleaner. The most common fixes? Repairing cords and replacing belts, services that are generally less than $25. (The shop does not repair Dysons, because of their complexity.) VILLAGE TRUE VALUE HARDWARE (Western Springs) has a staff ranging in age from 40 to 81 years old in its repair department to balance different expertises. Linda Johnson, the owner, says the hardware store has seen an uptick in vacuum repairs as more people choose not to buy new ones. The big guns in appliance sales—ABT ELECTRONICS (Glenview), SEARS, and BEST BUY—also offer repair work.

COMPLETE STONE RESTORATION in Bucktown refinishes and repairs natural stone—granite, marble, slate, terrazzo, and limestone—and specializes in restoration (the firm does not install). The co-owner, Donald Jackson, has a fine arts degree, and his partner, Chad Huggins, has a background in construction. Jobs may be scheduled up to six weeks out because Huggins and Jackson do the work themselves. SUNGLOSS MARBLE AND STONE RESTORATION in West Town repairs and restores limestone, marble, granite, terrazzo, and terra cotta on countertops, flooring, walls, showers, and outdoor stone and statuary. FRANK ZANOTTI TILE & STONE (Highwood) fabricates, installs, and restores granite, marble, and limestone countertops and tile, and has an extensive show room that stocks Italian tile, granite, and marble pieces. Zanotti’s father and grandfather were stonecutters in Italy, and he opened his shop in 1959. JJ KOOLHAUS (Oak Park) designs, fabricates, and restores furniture, stones, and metals. The co-owner, Jean Jacques Porret, whose expertise is in marble and natural stone, says the firm can repair and restore marble, stone, limestone, and granite floors, mantels, furniture, showers, and garden statuary. ROMAN MARBLE works on countertops, floors, and statuary, specializing in mantels.

For 50 years, the go-to standby for while-you-wait knife sharpening has been NORTHWESTERN CUTLERY in the West Loop, which accepts walk-ins. The cost is $3.50 per knife, and the shop can also sharpen tools, pocketknives, scissors, and small gardening equipment. GRINDSTONE SHARPENING (Naperville) offers mail-in sharpening services for kitchen, camping, sheath, and fishing knives, as well as lawn mower blades, chain saws, electric hedge clippers, and other tools, but those nearby can call to arrange a drop-off appointment. Prices range from $2 for a small knife to $5 for a kitchen cleaver. MAESTRANZI SHARP KNIFE SERVICES (Harwood Heights) does while-you-wait sharpening, with average prices at $2.50 a blade.

In Rogers Park, CLARK-DEVON HARDWARE, one of the largest independently owned hardware stores in Illinois, offers sharpening of rotary lawn mower blades, chain saws, scissors, and shears, as well as repair of snowblowers, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and some power tools. “We can sharpen almost anything with a blade and repair most small tools,” says the co-owner, Ken Walchak.

The East Coast–based SIR GROUT can pull tiles apart and put them back together if necessary. The process includes steam and a non-toxic cleaner to lift stains from grout and tile before applying ColorSeal, a proprietary product that brightens the grout and protects it from discoloration and mildew. A-ABACE SERVICES also offers a deep grout cleaning.
