Various baked goods at Floriole Cafe and Bakery
At Floriole, even the crumbs are good.

We jumped for joy when this bakery/café opened its doors in April on Webster Avenue’s foodie row, just west of John’s Place and the cupcake haven Sweet Mandy B’s. We should be doing jumping jacks as the pounds are slapping on, but it’s hard to pass up display cases loaded with perfectly formed, meringue-laden lemon tarts, buttery blocks of crumbly shortbread, and neat rows of glistening sticky buns. What started out as a stand at the Green City Market has expanded into an airy bi-level space augmented by flower-bedecked, could-be-Paris sidewalk seating. The young staff is friendly, the MO is serve yourself, and just about everything we’ve sampled has been divine. This goes for the custardy quiches nestled in thick, flaky crusts ($6), colorful pizzettas decorated with varying exotica like squash blossoms, crème fraîche, and pesto ($5), and terrific sandwiches couched on rustic house-made breads ($5.50). Lattes, cappuccinos, and hibiscus iced tea are dandy, even more so when paired with a lush passion-fruit tart or a Bordeaux specialty, canelé, a dainty caramelized shell filled with rum-scented custard. Add a few sips of chardonnay, and the Left Bank seems even closer. 1220 W. Webster Ave.; 773-883-1313.
