Joan Jett
BACK IN BLACK  Hear Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for a cool $7.

THE FIVE

Don’t-miss picks for Wed 08.04.10 through Tue 08.10.10:

1

concerts Joan Jett
With inflation, it’s about the same as putting another dime in the jukebox, baby. When Jett headlines Market Days, admission is a scant $7—or $83 less than a one-day ticket for this weekend’s other music fest.
GO: Jett and the Blackhearts play Aug 8 at 8:30 as part of Northalsted Market Days, Aug 7-8 from 11 to 10. $7 per day. Halsted from Belmont to Addison. chicagoevents.com

ALSO THIS WEEK: Tickets are still available for all sorts of Lolla aftershows, from The National at House of Blues to The New Pornographers at Metro. Or if you’re up to your ears in indie rock and could use an alternative, head to Jazz Showcase Aug 5-8 to catch Charles McPherson, who handled some of the sax duties for Clint Eastwood’s 1988 biopic on Charlie Parker, Bird.

2

galleries Art on Track
Speaking of price increases: Ten bucks for an el ride? Yes, when it’s a one-night-only gallery on rails. This second-annual event turns the Loop into a circulating art party. (Hey, the way CTA fares are going, it’s a bargain.)
GO: Aug 7 from 5 to 10. $5-$10. Main entrance at Adams and Wabash; additional boarding at other Loop CTA stations. artontrack.com

3

theatre Exits and Entrances
It’s long struck us as odd that Kate Buckley—the Jeff winner, cofounder of Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and former artistic director of Next Theatre Company—doesn’t direct more in Chicago. Which makes it worth the road trip to see her take on the great South African playwright Athol Fugard’s autobiographical two-hander in southwestern Wisconsin.
GO: Aug 5–Sep 26. $31-$64. 5950 Golf Course, Spring Green, Wisconsin. americanplayers.org

4

opera Così fan tutte
Wave farewell to your friend Flicka when the world-class mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade joins other megawatt opera stars (John Relyea, Ana María Martínez, the hunky Nathan Gunn) in concert performances of Mozart’s classic at Ravinia—her final Chicago gig before retirement.
GO: Aug 5 at 7, Aug 7 at 1. $12-$80. Ravinia, Lake Cook and Green Bay, Highland Park. ravinia.org

5

comedy Rod Blagojevich Superstar
The jury’s still out on Blago’s trial, but reviews for this Second City bonanza, first mounted last year and now reprised in the burbs, are in: f*&#ing golden. No word yet on whether the man himself will make a surprise cameo the way he did in the show’s earlier run, but the actor Joey Bland will field questions from the audience in the role of the ex-gov following every performance.
GO: Aug 6–Sep 18. $28.50-$33.50. The Second City at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W Campbell, Arlington Heights. metropolisarts.com

FREEBIE OF THE WEEK

classical Grant Park Music Festival
Soak up an entirely different kind of Lollapalooza with John Adams’s 1995 composition (think more trombones and tubas, less Perry Farrell), then stick around for the German violinist and critical darling Christian Tetzlaff playing Dvorák’s Violin Concerto.
GO: Aug 4 at 6:30. Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park, Michigan and Randolph. grantparkmusicfestival.com

ALSO THIS WEEK: On Aug 4, that international iconoclast of opera directors Peter Sellars talks to the Art Institute’s James Cuno about his work, including (we hope) a sure-to-be-memorable take on Hercules set for Lyric next spring.
