The South Sider was already one of Chicago’s most talked-about artists — a 2018 Venice Biennale collaboration, a commission to codesign the new Shirley Chisholm monument for Brooklyn’s Prospect Park — when she turned heads last summer with What Black Is This, You Say?, a multiplatform art project responding to Blackout Tuesday, when thousands posted black squares to Instagram to express outrage over George Floyd’s killing. Her series of quasi-abstract images was featured in the exhibition The Long Dream at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and led to an Expo Chicago–sponsored collaboration with star chef Erick Williams meant to spark conversations about race and identity.
