Don't let the chill crowd on hand in these photos fool you—the Haywood Tavern (2759 W. Augusta Blvd., Humboldt Park, haywoodtavern.com) is the place to be in Humboldt Park. (We just happened to swing by midway through the Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown, and since this is a TV-free zone, the busy scene had temporarily migrated elsewhere.)

The bar's owners have no high-flying aspirations here. They just wanted to make a corner bar in a neighborhood with depressingly few of them, where the food's better than average but the drinks are still cheap and unfussy (cocktails, like the rum-and-carpano Noriega, top out at $12; PBR's $3 a pint.) And the space itself is exactly what you'd want in your regular neighborhood hang, with exposed brick, comfy seats, and easygoing bartenders.

Here's what all we saw when we stopped in.
