Found in former industrial buildings throughout Chicago, timber lofts are versatile spaces, making them popular with city dwellers. Another big plus is that these residences can be had at a relative bargain.

Whether you’re a fan of River North, the South Loop, or Wicker Park, there are plenty of options downtown and in the inner ring neighborhoods with spacious lofts for sale. And while a sky-high budget will get you a loft that’s similar in size to a single family home, staying south of $400,000 leaves you plenty of one- and two-bedroom options.

And with a location straddling the border of University Village and the West Loop, there’s no shortage of dining options nearby.
